Great eats in New Bern, NC? Tue, 06/13/06 10:08 PM (permalink)
I am off to New Bern, NC in a month. Any suggestions about great places to eat where the Trent River meets the Neuse?

Barbeque is a favorite, but anything regional is attractive!

Thanks!

I don't remember the name of the place. . . wish could. It was on the main drag toward the north end in a store front type place. It was one of the best dining experiences I ever had.
Of course I was with my favorite person at the time and we were on vacation, but the food was absolutely stupendous. . . . sort of fusion with an emphasis on seafood. We talked to the chef for about 10 minutes and he gave me some great ideas which I've used a number of times the past few years.

If you are getting there via US 70 and Goldsboro you should try Wilbur's BBQ. It's at 4172 US Highway 70 E Goldsboro, NC on the east side of Goldsboro. The Skylight Inn is just a few miles north of US 70 in Ayden. You might give them a call before you go to make sure their hours haven't changed. In New Bern my wife and I like Captain Ratty's for seafood. Their steamed platter is pretty good as is their chowder.

You should be able to find lots about Wilburs by searching this site.

I've been to New Bern, when my wife was teaching at ECU, we stayed at a B&B for a weekend...now, where the heck did we eat!....

twice, we ate at Captain Ratty's Seafood and Piano Bar. A lunch and a dinner. Plus, we went there for drinks one night at the piano bar. Since we ate all of 5 meals in New Bern, we obviously liked it enough to go back. It's a little touristy from the looks, but the locals are as much a part of the clientel as tourists.

Pollock Street Deli - we grabbed our sandwiches to go and picnicked next to the river, which is right there.

There's a restaurant right across from Tryon Palace that we liked. They specialized in seafood, and, if memory serves me correct, we went for dinner and dressed slightly nicer than casual...like, business casual instead of Saturday afternoon casual.

Sunday, we had brunch at the Sheraton. It was good, and filled us until dinner back in Greenville. But, there was a diner in town at the end of Broad St. that we didn't eat at, because we had a continental b-fast at our B$B that would've like to try instead of the Sheraton food. Since we didn't go there, I can't recall the name, but the town is so small, tyou're sure to find it.

Be sure to take the trolly tour around New Bern. You'll learn that most of the famous houses have been moved at some point or another. And Tryon Palace is good too. Those two things, plus the original drug store where Pepsi was born, is all there is to do, unless you take some boat or fishing tours. None of the decor in the drugstore is original, but it's fun to go there and have a Pepsi at the spot where it was invented...even if you're a Coke drinker/collector like me.

We had a nice time that weekend. There's not much point for us to go back, but the B&B we stayed at was great and since there isn't a whole lot to do, we were able to relax a lot and just stroll around town window shopping, antiquing and grabbing the occasional cocktail.

WE ate at Moore's a few years ago and enjoyed it. If I remember correctly, it was a cafeteria style BBQ with a whole hog on the counter.

            Cheers, John
