Greensboro, NC, lunch

My friend will be stopping in Greensboro for lunch and (Oh, horrors!) does not want barbeque. Can you give me any other suggestions for her? I started off with Stammy's, but that's not what she wanted. Thanks for the help.

Green Valley Grill over near Friendly Center is good if a little pricey. Lox, Stock, and Bagel is a really good deli on Battleground at Oakcrest Avenue. The Village Tavern on Westridge off Battleground is another nice place for lunch and there may still be outdoor dining. Ghassan's Steak Subs and Kabobs is very good and usually busy - more than one location, I think. Harper's at Friendly Center is good, busy, can be noisy. Fisher's Grill - a true neighborhood bar and grill, which you don't find often in the South; great burgers and fried oysters! Lucky 32 - always good, seasonal menu, the blackberry cobbler is to die for! So many choices, lots of good places for lunch.

IMHO-your not missing anything by skipping Stamey's (but I'm a Memphis BBQ snob). Some recs: The Dog House (typical shotgun hot dog counter-across from hospital) 664 N. Main St., High Point; 336.886.4953 Yum Yum’s (Near UNCG) 1219 Spring Garden St., Greensboro; 336.272.8284 Gray’s Tavern (downtown) 343 S. Elm St., Greensboro; 336.617.5341 They have a Pimeinto Cheese slider that is killer! Sweet Potatoe's in Winston-Salem Fincastles in downtown Greensboro Another shotgun, mostly counter service but the dogs are really, really good. Oscar's Fine Food 427 S Wrenn St High Point, NC 27260 Full of irony, there are like 5 tables in the back room and a couple of picnic tables outside. Varied clientele. Real, old fashioned burgers.

I love Green Valley Grill, but it is pricey and not traditional Roadfood, I suppose. Village Tavern, again awesome, again a bit pricey, not classic Roadfood. Harper's-good but overrated, loud and expensive. Lucky 32-good, over priced, overly pretentious.

Jack's Corner Mediterranean Deli is my favorite roadfood place in Greensboro--it's close to UNCG.

mbrookes, Stamey's is not what it once was as you can see in Carolina Bob's trip report. We meet there and had dinner, it was O.K. but you are not missing too much. I am fond of Lucky 32, I like the changing menu and think the quality of the food is outstanding for the price. Village Tavern is also quite good, Jack's Corner is great, casual family owned place. I agree that Harper's is overrated and loud. I Love McCoul's Public House, it's in downtown on S.Elm. Great Irish, and some American food. I am big fan, and frequent customer. Wish you a great trip and happy lunch.

Thanks, folks. My friend should be able to make a good choice with your advice. I'll let you know what she says when she gets back.

My friend wound up at a place called Sweet Basil's which was conveniently on the way to the airport. She had Shrimp and grits and her sister had salmon salad. She said both were really good and the atmosphere was charming (in an old house).

She said both were really good and the atmosphere was charming (in an old house). Sweet Basil's is a wonderful farm to fork restaurant that focuses on using local suppliers wherever possible. It is not the type of place I would typically recommend on Roadfood as it is more of an upscale (though neither formal nor overly expensive) type of place. As long as it has been recommended, I would mention that the owners recently opened another, slightly more casual spot called Basil's & Co.

Wabbit mbrookes, Stamey's is not what it once was as you can see in Carolina Bob's trip report. We meet there and had dinner, it was O.K. but you are not missing too much. I Had my first visit today to Stamey's in Greensboro, North Carolina and for lunch (unaware that the ACC women's basketball tournament was playing directly across the street at the Greensboro Coliseum). Sat at the counter seat which President George W. Bush sat while visiting the 60-year-old BBQ restaurant. Ordered the combo plate of chopped pork Q with BBQ chicken along with the place's nearly rust-colored coleslaw [it's the ketchup -- I asked] and literal mound pf hushpuppies. All very good but I'm in no position to comment how it fared from years past as it was my inaugural visit. That said, I would certainly visit again. (BTW, how are the two Stamey's locations in Greensboro different?)
