Greenville, NC to Asheville NC Mon, 01/10/05 10:30 AM (permalink)
We're from NJ and will be visiting our daughter at East Carolina University in Greenville, NC in February. From there we'll be heading over to Asheville, NC. Any recommendations on where to get some good southern cooking? Thanks!

For good Southern plain cooking, try the Moose Cafe in Asheville.
It is accessible from I40 and I26-right at the entrance to the NC Farmers Market. They have good breakfast, but I like their lunch and dinner even better. They have all kinds of meats to choose from and a nice list of vegetables with usually a couple special vegis of the day. The vegetables are all fresh, not canned and they have to die for desserts if you have room after you have eaten. Be sure to try the apple butter and the chow chow.

In Ayden, which is about 10 miles from Greenville, you have two great spots:

Skylight Inn - serves the best eastern NC style BBQ in the state

Bum's - BBQ is OK but it's the vegetables you want to get here. Don't miss the collards as they are the best I've eaten anywhere.

You could make yourself a real nice authentic southern picnic by getting BBQ from Skylight and a selection of veggies from Bum's.

On the way to Asheville, I would recommend Allen and Sons in Chapel Hill. It's on highway 86, about a mile or two north of I-40. Excellent BBQ and don't forget to leave room for dessert.

I'd second the Allen and Sons recommendation. Alternatively, a couple of miles south of I-40 on 86 is the Flying Burrito. Modern Tex-Mex: Varied, healthy, fun, and yummy food.

Thanks so much. Will definitely try the Moose Cafe. And now I also know that that NC Farmer's Market is there! Thanks for your help!

Thanks! Will try to do the take-out thing from both and take them back to Greenville. Love collards and don't get them much up here in the North! Been going to Greenville for three years and have been eating mostly at large chain restaurants. Bojangles is about as "regional" as we've gotten! Not that there's anything wrong with that! Thanks again!!

The Flying Burrito sounds like fun! Will be in Asheville for about 4 days and plan on eating our way through! Thanks!

While in Greenville you could also swing over to B's BBQ, it is on B's BBQ road. don't be fooled by the appearance it is delicious, esp. the BBQ chicken and ribs, pork is ok.

Driving through Wilson you could stop at Mitchells, Parkers or a couple of other great BBQ joints.

In Chapel Hill area there is Allen and Sons exit onto 86 N (order a sandwich) or swing over into chapel hill and try Mama Dip's, great southern cooking.

In Greensboro and a short distance off I 40 is Stameys BBQ, another NC BBQ classic.

Any further west of Greensboro I am not as familiar with many spots as you travel along I 40.

I've heard that the Moose Cafe is really good as well. The Laughing Seed Café is a great place. It's vegetarian but a carnivore could be really happy there as well. Salsa's is also a great place. If you want to pick up any food from a grocery store, Earthfare has some great ready to eat stuff available. I've also heard a lot of good things about the Tupelo Honey Café.
