Grill top question. Sat, 10/20/07 2:12 PM (permalink)
I'm thinking of buying a piece of stainless steel to put on by BBQ grill to use it as a griddle. Anyone tried this? I'm thinking I would have to season it as well. Thanks.

The heat reflected and withheld by the metal may damage the grill. Grills are built with the heat leaving, your grill may warp or the the flame extinguished. If its a gas unit you may have the gaa build up in the unit and? Its of course not going to be like having a griddle that is built. The heat will concentrate in the area of the grill and will probably be hotter than you would like. Keeping the metal above the grill is going to be like camping out with a fire and iron skillet. Though with cooking everyone likes to control the heat and be able to adjust it for the style cooking. In all I think your going to be disappointed. If you have the metal you could experiment, though if its for any type of commercial cooking, the fire marshal is going to have a comment about it. RJF

Personally, I think you would be better off getting cast iron griddle. They are easy to care for especially if you oil them after you have cleaned them. Not to mention it adds a little iron to your food.

On my first cart, I had a piece of 1/4 steel cut to fit where the rack would normally go. So the whole thing was griddle. It worked great.! I miss that old cart
