I was a kid in Philadelphia when the  whole New/Old England style pizzas came in. Never developed a liking for them, too small and too much crust. The grinders were ok, but only just.

funny how names are,

here in KC grinders are sub rolls hollowed out from the end, stuffed with meatballs, sausage & peppers, cheese, sauce or whatever, then a little plug of bread is put in to cover the hole,

the the whole thing is baked, so the bread gets really toasted.

Best are found at Mario's in Westport, also some little shop about 120th & State Line

I'm originaly from the Enfield area of CT.
Whenever I fly into Bradley Field or am in the area , I go   to H&M Pizza and Grinders
It is on Spring Street close to the airport
As long as I can remember they have always been called grinders in this part of CT.

While on the grinder subject, there used to be a small place
in Danielson, Ct called "My Father's Grinders" that used cabbage in
place of lettuce. They were different, but delicious.
The crunchy, sweet cabbage was an enjoyable difference.

We are longtime Franklin Ave. Giant Grinder fans but we just last week found what we 
now feel is "The Holy Grail" of CT grinders. Check out Nardelli's and order the Italian with everything.

Cross the border into New York and a grinder becomes a hero. Stores that sell the sandwiches are hero shops. Not too many grinders here by that name.

And in some parts of Connecticut a grinder is hot while a sub is cold.

Best meatball sub?    Definately NOT Subway.   I had a coupon, so I recently tried their toasted meatball sub.  I really don't understand how they can refer to it as "toasted".  It was more microwaved than toasted and in NO way even began to resemble an oven baked sub / grinder, although the meat balls were better than I expected.

I grew up in Bridgeport and I don't think I ever had a bad meatball Grinder. All the italian/ pizza places had great pizza, grinders.. I used to get a Egg and pepper grinder from Rocco's on Arctic St. They also had Italian Sausage and pepper grinders and great bar pies.....Bill
