H Salt Fish & Chips

I tried a Roadfood search on this chain. Kept getting an error message. But the name seems familiar, so I am guessing I must have eaten there when I lived in Michigan years ago. What is the story of this place?

I have lots of family in the Hampton Roads area of Virginia and this chain had many locations there in the '70's. A Google search turns up www.hsalt.com complete with a history.

I worked as a cook at H. Salt's in Niagara Falls, NY the summer of '70 after I graduated from high school until I went away to college. It was the best fast food fish place ever. I still remember having spatter burns all over my forearms from the hot grease all summer. We used real potatos, not frozen fries, and did not stock ketchup, only malt vinegar.

I've never heard of this chain, but we did have Arthur Treachers in Baltimore. I wonder if fish and chips were a big fad in the 60's and 70's. Outside of Long John Silvers, You really don't see too many fast food places that are built on a fried fish model. Even McDonalds never really markets its fish sandwich, unless it is during Lent.

Yes, it was a fad in the sixties and seventies, and I agree with Niagara. H. Salt was the best around. There was one left in the Inland Empire a few years ago, but it wasn't the same.

In Tennessee we have Captain D's. Although it is not the best, what they do is cook to order. Here in Knoxville, everything we order is fresh and hot. That is the only way to get fish. I sorta like them and their fries and cole slaw is very good. Paul E. Smith Knoxville, TN

I started looking into the fish and chip fad of the 1970's. It appears that the price of cod fish jumped in the late 70's and early 80's. There was even a cod war over fishing rights between Iceland and Great Britian. Anyway, the price increase led to a lot of the fast food fish and chip places closing up.

There used to be one in the Binghamton, NY area back in the 70's. It has been gone for quite some time now.

There was one in Seattle until last year -- still might be there. I don't think I ever saw a customer in the place.
