We get a lot of fairly good deli items here in Dallas but, one thing the local deli's don't do or, know about is, "health salad". I sure miss it.
It's the perfect accompaniment for rich and heavy deli food.
I hope someone will publish the recipe here per damdam's request.

Irving's Deli is in Livingston , NJ on Route 10 east; it's in the Toys R Us shopping center...

wish I had that Harold's health salad  recipe for you...
try calling THE Harold himself; perhaps he'll share a little of his recipe with you..
it would'nt hurt to ask, maybe he'll be flattered..

Many thanks from this "health salad" starved ex New Yorker.

I am going to Harolds for Mothers day and I am going to ask Harold himself for the recipe, I don't know if he will give it to me but we shall see.

Thanks for the recipes. I've printed a copy.......... Confession. I'm generally turned off by topics, recipes, etc. stating healthy, organic, any reference suggesting "You will like this horse feed". This sounds delicious! Please understand, I consider myself as healthy and fit as most 66 year olds. Doc also agrees. I think this salad would be nice for a lunch meal.

I've never heard of health salad. It sounds like it is served in delis only? What's the story behind it?
I must say, judging from the recipe it doesn't sound that appealing to me. Of course, I've never tried it so I can't judge. Although I have had sliced cucumbers marinated in a sort of dressing that sounds awfully like the one posted by xannie_01. I'll admit it wasn't my favorite thing ever.

I think Xannie's is the most authentic.  You really need that strong sweet and sour taste in a health salad.

If the name "Health Salad" turns you off, maybe you will like the name Claremont Salad better? I found this salad/slaw under the Claremont name years ago and it has become one of my favorite recipes for a light, non-mayo salad/slaw and a good alternative for a tossed salad. It keeps well in the fridge for several days too. I usually make twice the dressing amount.

                          DamDam -

Please could you also ask him where he gets his pastrami.  See if he tells you that, too.  Just guessing he tells you he makes it himself.  No, I never asked him.  I just listened.  He told me he was doing $14,000 A DAY in this one location.  Yes, I heard him correctly.  That translates to $5. million out of that one store a year.

I did not notice the seating capacity.  But, you can figure around $25 a person is the average check.  So if anyone wants to speculate...That's around 560 customers a day.

I'll try to get the average Cheesecake Factory's annual unit sales and get back with it.  I'm just guessing it is around $8 million.   This is correct..Just checked their annual report.  Incidently, on new openings, they mention in a place like Glendale, they did $300,000 a week or about $43,000 a day.
Harold's should be rockin on Mother's Day!

Check out the "JoeRugo Mt. Fugi" when you're there...$45!  It will easily feed 10 except if Joe is at the table.  He ate half of it himself!

Hope you enjoy it.  I sure did.  One great thing is you can take home extra rye bread and your left over sandwich and have enough for another meal or two.  Maybe a cup of mustard?  I don't know if he allows you to take slaw and health salad and pickles.  Hey, no harm in asking.

The next day, take a small pot of water, bring about 1" high of water to a boil, place a strainer on top, put in your meat, cover it, and slowly turn it until it has all loosened up and reheated through..Just like having your own pastrami warmer.
