A few things spring to mind: A bottle of french wine Nutella (more a cultural thing as although its birthplace is italy, nutella is extremely popular in France) French Nicoise Olives Various Jams/Preserves French butter cookies (various brands available in US) Brittany sea salt an authentic french dijon mustard (or for laughs, a bottle of French's mustard) French soaps

This sounds like a wonderful "fun" project but also a lot of work to find food items from France. Things that would go well and that you could find in some large supermarkets might be orangina (an really delicious orange drink), some Dijon mustard, French pickles called cornichons, tiny green lentils which are excellent. You could buy canned escargot, chestnuts in a can or chestnut puree and maybe if you look at labels very carefully, you might be able to fine some imported vinegars, olives and oils. It will be interesting treasure hunt.

In addition to the above, a small can of truffled foie gras a small ceramic pot of Herbes de Provence and a colorful kitchen towel.
