HOOKAH ???

Our town is getting a hookah lounge.

I, for one, will not be investigating. Seems to me as it is a concept who's time has gone ... long gone.

Anyone been to one?

Is this a viable business?

Who goes?

    Hello All,
In my little town of Harrisonburg, Va.,
they wanted to open a hookah.
The city council shot it down so fast
that it made my head swim.
We are a college town and the
    city council is very conservative
because we are a college town.

I'm glad they did'nt allow it in the college town, college kids seem to go for it. The only thing good about it is most of the time, always in my experience, they NEVER serve any liquor.

I had a hookah in college, it had 6 hoses and everyone loved to come to my room and puff on the hookah. Doritos followed shortly thereafter.

I've seen many in the Mid East and a buddy even opened one in Chapel Hill. Seems to me to be an anachronism as smoking is such a no-no now. But people who go seem to like the flavored blends and the atmosphere. Yeah, whatever blows up your skirt. I don't notice an increase of crack heads or those evil marijuana users lurking around. I'll stick to beer. It's easier on the lungs.

As one who sometimes wishes for the good old days that never were, I've always thought the ideal saloon wold have all male bartenders, not admit anyone under 30, gambling in the back room, and girls upstairs. Now I'm ready to amend that to dream to allow for a"hookah" room and domino tables...

    Cheers, John

Some friends and I went to the Darvish Persian Tea House in Roswell, GA a few weeks back. It's a huge un-fancy place that draws in plenty of the Mideastern community here - there seemed to be a few birthday parties going on. Hookahs were offered, and when you're lying on a platform floor propped up on cushions eating good food and watching belly dancers, a hookah would fit in nicely. Me, I don't smoke, but the group next to us did, and I didn't get even a whiff of theirs. All in all, quite nice.

But just thinking of a straight-up hookah bar, I get ten-year-old images of wannabe hipsters choking on cigars and martinis - can't see it lasting too long.

A couple of them opened around Murfreesboro, Tn close to Middle Tennessee St university. From reading a description they seem to be attempting to skirt the public smoking ban by being a "tobacco shop' which is allowed under current law.

I know of two that is open in Knoxville.  One on the University of Tennessee strip and one downtown.  I have never done a hookah and quite frankly I am not sure that I understand what the concept is.  Maybe flavored tobacco???  Does not seem to be anything illegal???
