Hagen's Fish Market (Chicago)

This article about Hagen's Fish Market appeared in the Sun-Times and I thought those in the Chicago area might find it interesting.  Perhaps it's a possibility for a future Contingent meet?

Having lived at 3103 W. Montrose some 50 years ago I can sure relate. There were scads of mom and pop delis all over that area. Ahh the days....

My most recent visit to Hagen's was last Christmas Eve. Place was packed with customers picking up huge boxed orders. It took almost no time for me to be on my way with my previously ordered smoked sable, chubs, smoked trout and salmon dip. I saw the Salmon Candy, but unfortunately passed on buying any....a mistake I won't make twice!! It a meet-up is planned, count me in!

I've driven past Hagen's on many occasions but never stopped in.  My real goal in that neighborhood was a mom & pop hot dog joint called Toot's.  Great dogs and excellent hand cut, fresh fries.

Toot's is now gone, so why not focus on Hagen's.  Maybe we can start thinking about stops for another Spring Fling when the weather gets better.  In fact, let me suggest, in addition to Hagen's, a visit to the carts selling Puerto Rican and Cuban street foods in Humboldt Park.

MilwFoodlovers recently sent me an email about a "new" banh mi joint, Nhu Lan, down Lawrence Avenue, just east of Hagen's.  So now we've got three stops.  I think we should plan another evening at La Palapa for all the folks who missed it last spring.  That's four stops.  Maybe a couple of shopping stops in between and it sounds like a tour to me.

Sounds like fun, just make sure we steer clear of the guy with the pit bull puppies in Humbold Park. I never met a puppy I didn't want to take home.

    MODS-
can we move this thread over to eat n greets?

the idea sounds great, and can we end up the day at Burt's?
or of course we could get together at Burts sooner in the colder weather,
    without waiting for spring.

Days that are out for us and/or the Roadhouses: April 10th and 18th, May 1st, 22nd, all of Memorial Day weekend.

I think La Palapa should be saved for a summer outing when we can be more sure of warm weather so we can sit outside to get the full effect (buddy, we went there in June last year...okay, technically, it was June 20th, so the last possible day of spring, I guess)  Sit with your back to the train tracks and ignore the traffic on 34th and Damen and it's just like being in Puerto Vallarta....or so I'm told.

I agree with Iris - why isn't this in Meet & Greets? I just found out about it 'cause I happened to see the link on The Contingent page on Facebook.

Sounds like a fun day and interesting stops!

End of March is out, as I'll be in NOLA at the Roadfood Festival.

Count me out for Superbowl Sunday, as well.  GEAUX SAINTS!

If we decide April, May or on into Summer, I'm pretty much free, as of now.

I'd be good with February or March.  April and May are just complicated for Mr. Maki and I.

Howdy folks!  Let's not get ahead of ourselves here.  This is a thread about Hagen's Fish Market.  The only reason I started talking about a tour was because Brad Olson, in his initial post, mentioned Hagen's as a potential stop on a future tour.  I do have some ideas for a spring tour for The Contingent and I will start a fresh thread in the Eat & Greet forum as we get closer to warmer weather.

BTW, Marcus Leshock, the WGN reporter who did the piece on Hot Dog University, inspired by WTMJ's story on The Contingent, wants to do a similar story for the Chicago market to air on WGN.  Details as they develop.

Sorry Buddy, but my schedule's filling up quick and i can't wait for warmer weather to start at least discussing a date.

    I started a thread here.

    Please continue the Hagan's discussion!

Is Hagens comparable to that place with the smoked shrimps by the Calumet bridge?

CSD, make the trek down to Calumet Fisheries; you won't be sorry.  Try any of their smoked fish, particularly the smoked shrimp.  Smoked trout was exceptional too.  Tasty fried oysters to boot!
