Happy Labor Day! Mon, 09/7/09 3:05 AM (permalink)
First...enjoy the day off, for those of you in a place where that happens!

Second...Labor Day is not just a day off for picnics and parties. It is the day we should all be remembering those in organized labour who gave their time, energy, money, and sometimes their lives in the effort to give all working people a better life. Things like 40-hour workweeks, child labour laws, mandatory breaks, and minimum wages came through the efforts of ordinary men and women...and the struggle continues. These rights and privileges that so many take for granted can be taken away at any moment, and many of them are already under attack. So while you're enjoying your cookout with the family or whatever it is you do to celebrate today, please take a moment to thank those who have come before you, and who fight alongside you, for the work they've done to make your life better.

Felix, I just finished a stint as part of the negotiating team for my company's first union contract. It was grueling but we reached a tentative agreement last week. This Labor day has more meaning than most, even though I am working.

I love you guys!  IATSE Local 26, third-term officer.

Congrats, mr chips!  In the last year, we've organized three first-time contracts, and renegotiated two major ones (one of which we proposed a two-year wage freeze and completely floored management).  I love sitting at the table.

This is what I'm doing today: Labor Fest.

Hope everyone has a great Labor Day!  We're got the smoker up and the baby back ribs on with their rub and
Caribbean mop and are going to enjoy them with homemade creamy cole slaw and baked beans.  We're just going to enjoy the day at home with great food and lots of beer!

This is the first Labor day I've ever worked - I've always worked straight salary and have never been on a time clock - the company that bought us last year pays us time and a half over 40 and double on Sundays or holidays, so yes, it did not bother me one bit to work today.  Plus, they're a great company to work for and we have excellent benefits - last spring I took advantage of their 4/10's and totally enjoyed being off Saturday, Sunday and Monday for about 8 weeks.

Right now we're in our busiest time and we'll be working 6 and sometimes 7 days a week until December.

baileysoriginal, that sounds like a gin or an oil mill. I love the oil mills in fall... the whole area smells like baked ham.

Sadly the Architects and Brow Beaten Husband's Local 666 doesn't hold much sway...I'm usually at the office building comp time I'll never actually get compensated for or in the case of this last weekend, home painting the living room while simultaneously smoking a picnic roast and slow cooking mexican beans.

I'd go on strike but I'd get fired and starve..

I always join in solidarity with the laborers of the world and commemorate the actual labor day on May 1st-The International Workers Day instead of the isolated and regional US holiday so that when the holiday weekend rolls around in late August or early September I can do precisley that, picnic, party, barbecue and enjoy my family and friends

Good for you!  I also celebrate International Workers Day, but since it is not called Labor Day, and since Labor Day is, in fact, a US national holiday (which is never in late August, as it is always the first Monday in September), I did not think it was inappropriate to celebrate it as the workers in the US have done since the late 1800's.  Hope you enjoyed your day!

Often the first Monday in September is 9-1,  or the 2nd which makes the  Labor day weekend commence in late August. Several English speaking nations around the world call International Worker's Day or May Day, Labour Day.

Why is it so important for you to be right?  Well...you got me.  I am completely and totally wrong to celebrate a national holiday in my country on the day it happens.  I should completely ignore the fact that US Labor Day started in the late 1800's, and I should only ever celebrate International Workers' Day.  I will continue to make the sad mistake of participating in the holiday, and the celebrations attached thereto, although it is wrong to do so because the US declared a holiday different from the rest of the world.  Happy now?

Hooooooooooold up, I never put your comments down or dissed you, even when you "corrected" my stance of saying Labor Day Weekend is late August or early Sept, you were the one that nit picked saying it is always the first Monday of Spetember, you also wrote that it is not called Labor Day elsewhere. I don't feel it is important for me to be right, however I can't stand on the side and let statments that I know are wrong be made  and remain silent

If I stated that hamburgers were originally made from ground ham in China and then altered in the US, I would hope that someone corrects that misnomer, isn't that what this forum is about? Sharing knowledge and learning things from each other?  I don't play can you top this or king of the hill

i also never told you not to celebrate the US version of Labor Day, I celebrate as a  family get together and do the respect for the worker's on the international holiday, that is what i said on my first post in this thread

I am always happy no matter what occurs around me or in my life, just being alive brings me enormous happiness, a very simple formula to follow

No need to apologize Felix, I too, have misintepreted the tone of a message on line or in an e-mail because there is no way to get a feel for it, unlike a phone/cell chat or face to face where one can hear the emotion of the speaker's voice, the written word is sterile and easy to misinterpret
