Happy Valentine's Day

What are some of your romantic dinners that you make for your special someone?  My husband loves when I sear some divers scallops or make shrimp scampi.

That would work for me! Question...how do you know you are getting diver's scallops? In order to qualify they should have been hand picked off of rocks by a SCUBA diver...when I worked on the Cape they were packed as either wet or dry. Meaning that they were shucked on the boat and either packed in sea water (wet) or dry packed. Supposedly the dry packing method allows for better flavor. We used to see a lot of the bay scallops (about the size of your thumbnail) off Cape Cod. Sea scallops are the much larger variety...also I have heard that some commercial fisherman catch rays and use a type of "cookie cutter" to punch out scallop sized chunks. Highly illegal.

Dry diver scallops are the best.  They are very, very, very expensive, even for restaurants.  I used them when we did wine dinners.
Years ago there was that rumor about skate wings being punched out as scallops.  I never saw it and I never heard of any fishermen actually being accused of doing it.  I was in Boston and on the fish pier every day, so I really think it was just that.......a rumor.

I go to a local and reputable fish monger here in Ft. Lauderdale and I believe they are dry packed.  Also I always thought the diver scallops were the big ones.  Cape Cod is another one of my favorite places.

I've been to the Close Pegase Winery in Napa Valley. The winery was designed by architect, Michael Graves, and they have an extensive art and sculptural garden.

Happy Valentine's Day. I made a different kind of pizza today. The crust utilizes a little extra butter instead of any olive oil and I also went a little heavier on the sugar with a whole tablespoon. I shaped the crust to fill a pizza pan and then I took a knife to cut out a heart shape. I then trimmed the edge with left over dough. Next I baked the dough for about 15 minutes at 400 degrees until it just started to get golden brown. I took the dough out of the oven and brushed a couple pats of melted butter on the dough. It took me about 15 minutes to dress the dough with dark chocolate chips, mini marshmallows, peanuts, red heart shaped JuJubees and cinnamon candy spice. I kicked the temperature of the oven up to 450 degrees and put the pizza back in and watched it carefully until the marshmallows started turning brown on top. That took about 5 minutes.

That beautiful '97 Cabernet Sauvignon with shrimp scampi?  Really?  I would have gone with a Mitsuko's Vineyard Chardonnay.
Clos Pegase has to be the most beautiful winery in Napa Valley.

My hubby loves it when I cook ribeye steak for him.  So when I can't think of anything new, ribeye steak is my go-to backup plan.

WOW!!!! My wife wanted to go to the local Hot Link place so we did with the kids. Cheap date. We both worked late and couldn't drive far or cook something really good.
