Hard candy broke my tooth! Thu, 08/3/06 4:54 AM (permalink)
I didn't listen to my dentist. My husband came home from San Francisco last night and brought some of Mrs. See's candy lollipops home. It took out some of my porcelain veneer!

Will it make me stop eating hard candy??? Well, maybe temporarily until I get my tooth fixed. Until then, it's Mrs. See's nuts & chews. The dark chocolate is to die for!

Last time, hard candy took out my crown. Now THAT was bad news!

You must be traumatized! I smell a lawsuit.

I broke a tooth once on a "pearl" from a steamed mussel. Even worse, the same tooth lost its filling from the heavy weight of an enchilada! Unfortunately, in both instance I was the cook.

Unfortunately but also fortunately See's is a West coast thing. They do sell out here in some malls during Christmas or I have to do mail order when I MUST have a fix. During Christmas I'll usually buy 2 2lb boxes of the nuts and chews and ration them out. 1 year I made it to my b'day in March when I ate the last 3 pieces.

Sorry to hear about the tooth.

I broke a tooth on a "Mentos" once. Unfortunately it was before we had a full time dentist on the island and I had to fly to Anchorage (at that time, about $900 round trip)to have it fixed.

Always suck on a "Mentos" for a while to soften it up before biting down on it! Trust me on this one!!!

I called my dentist and got an appointment for tomorrow. I can already hear him scolding me saying, I told you so before--NO HARD CANDIES!!!

The last time this thing happened, my dentist told me to get this thing called Dentemp from the local drug store or supermarket and use it to glue the crown back until I could get to his office. You can also use it as a temporary cavity filling. My husband, being a former dental assistant in the air force, did a stupendous job gluing my crown back in. It was such a good job, the "temporary" Dentemp stuck so good, the dentist couldn't get it out. Took about 6 months before it fell out and I could get it glued in permanently. So then he told me next time to use denture cream.

Many, many years ago we were traveling in the Devon-Cornwall region of England, and practically living on Cornish clotted-cream toffees--incredible stuff. As I was happily chewing away on one, I suddenly felt like the left side of my jaw disintegrated. I saw a dentist as soon as we got back to London, and he was able to fix the tooth with a post and filling that lasted for years before I had to get a crown.

Don't chew "White Rabbit" Chinese milk candy. Pulled a crown right out of my head.

Darn it, I so miss eating those sticky things like jujyfruits, hot tamales, and those chocolate-covered caramels (what are they called?) at the movies... but I'm just scared to set myself up for another crown!

Raising my hand, I was another victim to the White Rabbit candy. Pulled the crown right out & ended up with extensive dental work.

I do love the nuts & chews from See's Candies.

I've never had problems with my teeth but my dentist used to scold me for chewing ice. He found this out from a form I had to fill out. I always thought "ha ha!" but yes, then one day it happened and "crack went the molar". It has been filled and from that day there has been no ice chewing going on here!

I cracked a tooth once on parmesan cheese (parmagiano reggiano, of course). Hey, cheese is a snack to me.....

AndreaB--my husband had the same thing happen to him last week. He chewed on ice and cracked his tooth. He had to get a crown made. His first one. Gosh, I got a whole garden full of crowns in my mouth.

Saw my dentist yesterday. Good news. He said I got by lucky--the gold crown base is in tact, and only the porcelain veneer chipped off. I opted to have him just sanded down the rough edges rather than order a new porcelain veneer, being that the chip is on my upper inner back molar. Now here's the bad news. He checked my other teeth, and my OTHER molar on the other lower side has cracked and has grinded down due to my grinding teeth at night. I swear I'm not under any sort of stress. I do have 4 teenagers living in my house right now though.

I think I should carry that Dentemp with me when I travel. What a nightmare it would be to have a filling or crown come undone during a vacation trip.

I cracked a tooth when I was 10 years old on a sucker called "slo-poke"...basically a hard carmel lollipop.Anyone remember those?Anyway, for whatever reason the dentist put a gold crown on the tooth and I still have it(37 years later)The experience never stopped me from enjoying hard candy, etc..and I have been lucky thusfar to have not have had a repeat dental emergency like that.
