Harrisburg to Austin

We will be driving from Harrisburg Pa. to Austin Texas in Mid October.  We will be driving a Toter with a trailer, so we will need large parking lots.

I 81 south to I 40, West on I40 to Little Rock, West on I30 to Dallas and South on I35 to Austin.

Just looking for great local spots,  all types of road food.

Just east of Dallas and just off I-30 in Royce City, TX:

We love this place!  Make note of the hours; they are closed Monday - Wednesday.  Lots of room for you to park:  http://fishcamproysecity.com/

Also, on I-30 through Dallas with plenty of parking room:

Not far off I-30 and really good Roadfood:  http://themeccarestaurant.com/ .  The Sterns reviewed Mecca very favorably on here on RF and I give it my  as well!

Just in time for lunch on day one you will come upon New Market, VA.  Just off I-81 is this wonderful establishment.  My most recent visit there in May was most satisfying:

If you start real early, forty or so miles down I-81 is this:

Take the 250 West exit, follow straight for two miles and you will literally run into it at the bottom of the hill entering downtown.  If you have some time, take a walking tour of Staunton, "the Queen City of the Shenandoah".  It is a Victorian-era gem.

Those are my last recommendations about places I know well.  Others will have to advise about Knoxville, Memphis, and Little Rock - they are "drive-through" cities for me as I split my Dallas - DC drives into Dallas - Nashville and Nashville - DC segments.

Of course a visit to Franklin's BBQ in Austin is mandatory.  I think it's fair to say that it is now the best-known BBQ place in the free world.  There is a national ad running now with Chef Nobu visiting Aaron Franklin!

Get there early; don't make Hitler's mistake!

    Michael, you win "first".
    But, I win "incessant posts".

The new "You Tube" feature is just too much fun and that particular Hitler video is the second funniest of that series I've seen.  (The funniest was "Hitler finds out that Scott Brown was elected in Massachusetts")!
