Harvey House opens in Kansas City Thu, 08/17/06 9:40 AM (permalink)
I haven't had a chance to try it, but a Harvey House Diner reopened last week in Kansas City, Missouri's Union Station.

It isn't exactly like the original Harvey House at the Station, but has a similar layout including a long central counter with touches of art deco. At this time, the waitresses aren't wearing Harvey Girl uniforms, but I think that may come.

Sandwiches run from $3.99 - $5.99. The highest priced item on the entire menu is a smoked salmon breakfast plate at $8.49.

Open 6:30AM - 2:30PM, on weekdays and 8AM to 4PM on weekends.

I had lunch there on Monday. The burgers and fries looked good and everyone seemed to enjoy their food. However, the service was awful. Despite there being plenty of empty seats, it took 5 minutes in order to be seated, wait staff did not seem to know what they were doing, and management didn't seem to care. I saw three tables get up and leave because no one came to take their order. I will give them another try as it was only the third day that they were open. I will say that their ice cream is severely overpriced. I ordered a Chocolate Malt for $3.99 and expected it to be served like a diner malt. What I got was about 10 - 12 oz in a very narrow tulip vase with about a 2 inch opening.

When they announced that they were going to open it up, the newspaper indicated that it was going to be a 24 hour operation. Hopefully, when the 5,000 + IRS employees move into the old Post Office across the street they will extend the hours.
