They opened an "Extreme Pita" in my neighborhood on East 23rd Street about a year ago. It looked like they put an awful lot of money into the build-out. It lasted about 3 months. There's about a thousand independent falafel/pita/gyro stores in a 20 block radius, most of them fantastic. I had no desire to patronize this sanitized, watered down version of middle-eastern food.

That menu is a total riot. Regional variations include Buffalo Chicken pita and Philly Cheesesteak pita; I wonder if we're going to get a Chicken Fried Steak pita and a Barbeque Brisket pita down here? Maybe a barbacoa and refritos pita? I wonder why they call them pitas instead of wraps? Houston has a huge Middle Eastern community using the typical flat breads of the region in a variety of cuisines. Try the pita breads at Fadi's or Dimassi's, fresh out of the brick ovens, or the Gyros at Niko Nikos or One's a Meal Greek Village or the Turkish doner (on pide) at one of the Turkish restaurants like Istanbul Grill in the Village. There are a couple of Israeli restaurants that make fantastic thick and fluffy pita bread.

My son lives in Riverside CA and there is a franchise there, he discovered it a few months ago and raves about it. We are going out to his home in 2 weeks and I had already planned to check it out as to the best of my knowledge it's the only one in So Cal, there are several in No Cal
