Have you ever had your car stolen?

I have, 3 times, one was a 1971 Boss 350 Camaro, happened in San Francisco. It was in 1971, I thought at first I had gotten drunk and couldn't remember where I had parked it, although I knew deep down I had parked it in my assigned space, police found it the day before I was to get my Insurance payoff, it was stripped. The second time was in 1973, a beautiful 73 Thunderbird, it got popped twice in Los Angeles, got it back both times, it also got stripped, turned out the theif was actually the Dealership in Marina del Rey, Wright Ford, they were stripping many cars they sold, kept the parts, got the Insurance $, then replaced the same parts. Ever had a car go missing?

No. I always drive hideous looking third hand heaps that no self-respecting car thief would want to get near.

Some idiot stole our 65 AMC hornet station wagon in, I think, 1990. Our insurance company paid us off rapidly - Why not? It was a pittance the car was worth. A month or so after the theft I got a call from my insurance company telling em to go to a repo- depot not far from where we live and to pick up my car. So, I went as suggested, saw the car, stripped, no wheels, no seats, no windows, not even a steering wheel. I declined to take posession of the rotting hulk... Cheers, John

Had an 1985 Toyota Truck I used for work which was stolen. It was found the day I received my check. I told the insurance company I'd give them back their check but they told me it was too late. Replaced it with a used Izusu Trooper which was also stolen. It showed up in Tempe, AZ. A little old woman was driving it. She bought it from the thief. The theif would buy a wreck and then steal one just like it. Then he'd sell it using the ID numbers from the wreck. Marina del Rey is nicer now. ;)

I had a 07 refer truck stolen when it was at the last stop on its run a few months back. The thing was covered with our company name so it’s not something that would blend in. The cops found it totaled under a free way bridge.

Several years ago my husbands 1994 Chevy Silverado Mark III pick up was stolen. He was driving truck at the time, and parked at a garage that a friend of ours owns. When he got in he called me to pick him up. Didn't think anything about it, went to get him and it dawned on me he drove himself to work. We searched the lot, no truck. Called the police, they found it 2 days later stuck in the mud along the road running through the swamps about 10 miles from our home. It was buried up to the running boards with the doors open. Ended up it was a group of 5 kids, all under 14. They broke into the garage and each took a set of keys and a vehicle, went joy riding. Our insurance paid for the massive clean up on the pick up, but my husband never felt the same about it after. It had been his baby up until then, low mileage, kept nice. Pam

From the now it can be told department: In 1971 after turning 18, my brother took his earnings to purchase a new Shelby Mustang, 3 months later his very low Viet Nam draft lottery number came up and he was summoned to report and he just up and left to Vancouver BC Canada where he remained for several years after the Jimmy Carter pardon and amnesty in 1977, he loved it there and the only reason he came back to So Cal was that the girl he met and fell in love in 1981 with was from So Cal and didn't want to live anywhere else. Anyhow, after about a month in the garage I took the keys and decided to take a ride in it, no more than a mile away from the house on the surface street the engine locked up and threw a rod totaling the engine. So knowing my brother still had time on his insurance-he still made his car payments, I had a pal who worked at the garage that declared the motor DOA, make it dissappear for parts-then my wife dropped me off at a shopping center known for its high car theft ratio, it was a Friday evening and after I walked into Monkey Wards and bought a bottle of perfume asking the clerk for help so she'd remember me, I walked out and around the lot for ten minues before reporting it stolen, when the cops showed, they didn't even shrug their shoulders when I told them it was a Shelby Mustang, I think they were telling me-what did you expect here you idiot with their body language Three months later the insurance company paid off and my brother made money. I didn't tell my brother what happened in 1971 until about 2005, he couldn't stop laughing for an hour.

What you have just described is insurance fraud. Ever wonder why car insurance is so expensive?

In 1994 I had a 92 Ford F-150 stolen from behind my apartment in Fernandina Beach, Florida. I missed it when I went outside to go to work. I called the local police and they came and made the report. About thirty minutes after they left they called me and said my truck had been recovered in Brunswick, Ga. I called the Brunswick police and they said they had it and to come and get it. I got a friend to take me up there and when I got there they said that I could not get it as they had to dust it. They got me to go to their impound lot out back and tell them what was missing. My tools were gone but the interior of the truck was intact. They called me about ten days later and told me to come and get it. I got my friend to take me back up there and when I went to get it my cd player, amp, speakers,cb radio and my radar detector was gone. I told them all of that stuff was in it when I had done the inventory. They basically just blew me off and said to report it my insurance company. Thats what I did but I told rep that some of the things had come up missing from the police impound yard. He said that was common with that police dept but paid me anyway.

Does having a legally parked car towed by an unscrupulous traffic agent count?

I never had my car stolen, but once back in the 70's, I woke up to go to work and my 67 Chevelle convertibles was up on logs and the wheels and tires were gone! Seems they had stolen the wood from a neighbors wood pile and put it under the car to remove wheels and tires. It's not like they were nice either, they were stck steel rims and Firestone Delux Champion bias-belted tires. They did leave me my center hub caps and lug nuts, but I had to hunt through the gress to find them (lug nuts). MD
