Does anyone have any input on how the PukaDog would go over here on the mainland?

I love Hawaii as much as the next person. But I seriously doubt anything with a name starting with "Puka" would go over well here.

Do you have the equipment that puts the holes in the rolls?? Do u have a supplier for the rolls or are u baking them yourself?? I personally think they would go over at fairs and festivals or tourist/beach areas, but not in a small town type hot dog joint. Are u also making the different relishes(mango, coconut, pineapple)? When ur done with the web site send me the link and I will add it to the directory on hotdoggintheus.com

hotdogginintheusa, I have the machines I signed and exclusivity contract so that I would be the only one in the US mainland to have it. I also have a source for the rolls. Thanks for your input. I appreciate you putting a link on your site. I will be setting up in South Florida and in the Orlando are to start but hope to roll it out nationwide within a year. Hope to hear from you soon with more input or suggestions. Thanks

Jammer, I would check to see if there is more than one company making the machines because I saw a cart at a fair selling them on the mainland. Thats why I said it would work at a fair. They were adding just mustard, ketchup, relish and onion no tropical relishes. I just can't remember which fair it was.

Thanks for that input. I have a contract with the guy who has the patent on the machine. There could very well be someone else out there. I will have to do some ivestigating. Thanks for that info very much appreciated. My marketing plan doesn't involve doing fairs at this time however I won't rule it out. I am mainly starting along the coast of Florida and Orlando area. Then go from there. I have already had some interest from corporate America but am shying away from that at the moment

Seems like that would be a fairly simple device to fabricate yourself. It looks to be just a simple metal rod that heats up enough to lightly toast the inside of the hole it makes in the bun. Something built on the order of a soldering iron with a controlable thermostat would work. Unless this guy was pretty reasonable on his "patented" device, I'd look into making my own version of it. The key would be in the rolls you use.

Jammer, How closely do you plan to emulate Puka Dog's toppings? Do you have your own recipes for the lemon garlic sauces and tropical fruit relishes? Have you ever tried an actual Puka Dog? I'd like to hear from anyone on here who has. They sound delicious, but I'd like to hear some opinions on the taste from folks who've sampled them.

I ate at puka dogs last year while in Kawaii. To say they were addictive would be an understatement. My favorite was the cocanut. I too have thought about building an island theme resteraunt/cart/truck. I have already gotten the papaya recipe. Now I must figure the rest out. Best of luck in your new business adventure though...

I own a bowling alley and we are thinking of making the cafe a hot dog heaven. We already have the best burgers in the area. Interested in knowing more about hawaiian hot dogs. Mike

Hey Man, How's the Jammer business going in Florida? By the way, and FYI for anyone who's interested: Puka Dog now offers most of their mustards, sauces and relish toppings packaged in 9 oz. jars over their website (pukadog.com). I bought a sampling of their entire line (for R&D purposes of course) and have been feasting on different combinations all week using my favorite mild pork/beef polish sausage. I found a Hawaiian sweetbread type roll in a size that works well as a substitute for their bun. I've tried it sliced open like a conventional dog and with the hole (but untoasted), and prefer the hole. Never had an actual puka dog in Hawaii, but if it's any better than what I've tried this week, it alone would be worth the plane ticket.
