Sundancer & I will be having lunch next Tuesday, Nov. 30, at Gus's Deli on Market Square, downtown Knoxville. Get together time is from 11:30 - noon. We'd love to have any other knoxville roadfooders join us. Next time, we'll plan our knoxville get together a little more in advance. We'd love to break bread with you.

Fun lunch with Sundancer today. He is an interesting person to be with, he's had a lot of experiences and can tell good stories. We ate at a place on Market Square, downtown Knoxville, right across the street from TVA headquarters. Paul used to frequent this place some years ago when it was under different ownership and said it was packed at lunchtime. Today, the place, Gus's Restaurant, was dead. It had all the trappings of a roadfood place, waitress in a beehive hairdo, Phyllis, was friendly and the place did not carry any kind of aura, other than roadfood. I had a gyro, which was quite good, and Paul had a steakburger which was good. But the fact it was right across from TVA and I saw all these people walking by it, led me to believe that something about it was not appealing to a large audience. I enjoyed it, though, had a good time with Paul, and hope to do it again and give enough notice so that other Knoxvillians can join us.

The place that Carlton referred to started out as the Sunspot, I believe in the early 1900's. It remained that way for many years and I want to Guess that the Greek family of Peroulas bought it and ran it for many years after that. I ate there several times a week from 1963-1983. Their veal parmi, red snapper and everything else they served was wonderful. Our main office moved from downtown Knoxville to West Knoxville and due to proximity, we no longer had the opportunity to dine there on a frequent basis. Mr. Peroulas's children are successful in Knoxville. One became a state representative and the other a neat attorney in Knoxville. I certain missed the fine food of this establishment when we moved. Now it is no more. It was sorta neat to return there today. The current restaurant is but a shell of the place that I enjoyed for many years. It used to be packed everyday and we would wait in line for a open seat. The food was never less than excellent. Today the site was vacant, food was good and I do not understand why they do not have much business. The Peroulas family is very famous in Knoxville for the restaurants they have owned and operated. I sincerely wish they were back. I wonder if Louis's on Broadway are related as their food is similar?? Paul E. Smith Knoxville, TN

He's a fascinating man, and he shares my perversions for fine drink, fine food, and fine women. I just wish I was as good-looking as him. Some guys have ALL the luck.
