The pictures posted in the Restaurant of the Day slot are driving me nuts. If it wasn't so far, almost to Canada, I would grab my main squeeze and head for those fruit pies. Anyone know of anything that great closer to NYC.

Also, does anyone know if the Helen's in Ellsworth, which I'll be only about 35 miles from in about 48 hours, is as good as the original?

I have never been to the one in Ellsworth, but it opened (I believe) after the one further north had been bought by a new owner. I was VERY pleasantly surprised that the Machias restaurant was just as good after changing hands, as often that is a bad thing. I would have to guess that the new owners are doing just as good a job at both locations...and like the ancient mariner says...if I was anywhere close to that pie, I would HAVE to get some!

Any updated information on Helen's? I haven't been up that way in years but am traveling Downeast with my sweetie in 2 weeks and need to introduce him to (1) lobster (in easy-to-eat form, before committing him to butchering a whole boiled one) and (2) berry pies. Itinerary-wise the Ellsworth Helen's would work better (and I've never been there), but if it's looking as though Machias is better, we can adjust.
