Hello from Germany!

Hello Forum! Yesterday in the evening the german TV channel RBB presented a documentary about Jane and Michael Stern in german language. Link: http://www.rbb-online.de/..._2009/ID137616387.html A very entertaining 60 minutes for me here in Germany, never heard of the couple before, as a fan of the american diner culture, the trad. food served in these diners, I was very pleased with this good documentary. Please excuse my bad english, I was born in the year 1956 here in Germany, my father was an american officer, serving with the Air-Force in Korea and Vietnam, I only met Bob one time here in Germany, in the year 2001. Nice Forum, kind regards from Germany! Michael P.S. I used "Alabama", there was no option for Germany in the list, sorry...

Hello Michael, Welcome to the forum. We do have a few other members from overseas who are interested in the American diner culture. In the miscelleaneous forum, we also discuss topics on the American food scene, that is, food mostly purchased for eating at home. Then in the 'Fast Food Franchises and non-Roadfood Chains' section, we discuss the "usual suspects": McDonalds Kentucky Fried Chicken (now only called KFC here) Pizza Hut Burger King (you get the idea) Also, you may be interested in the associated web site: http://www.roadfooddigest.com/ This long-running thread may be of interest: http://www.roadfood.com/Forums/Where-Have-All-the-German-Restaurants-Gone-m36470.aspx Many of these restaurants are 'stuck in time'. We have thousands of posts in the archives.

Welcome to the forum. I have driven about 10K miles in Germany and many other countries in your area. Germany is one of my favorite places to visit. Perhaps it is because many folks speak English. I hope you enjoy Roadfood. Paul E. Smith Knoxville, TN

Moin David, Sundancer! I never consume fastfood, and the few "Diners" here in Germany, these are just fakes, not the real thing, just very bad copies, to rip off some money from customers for lousy food and service, sorry Remembering my time as a Soldier in the german BUNDESWEHR in the late 1970s, there were no Diners in Canada, just stupid Pizza, Burgers, and "Foot-Long-Sandwiches", what a mess... Even in Winnipeg, we were not able to buy a good meal, for big money..., and the service was horrible. Regards Michael

Michael, Thanks so much! Thanks to Google translate and you, I think I see my grandmothers Bavarian dumplings. She called them Kläce (sp?) but I think in Germany they are semmelknodel. Anyway they were light fluffy dumplings made using stale hard rolls, milk, onion and a little parsley. Here they are:

Moin Milw! In german language we call them "Kaesekloesse", they are somewhat hard to perpare, but a lust to eat... Kaesekloesse: http://www.kochmix.de/rez...e-kloesse-22272-2.html I prefer the trad. "Kartoffelknoedel" / "Semmelknoedel", as a "Beilage" for a "Beef-Gulasch", somewhat heavy, but I die for it... Michael

Welcome, Michael - thanks for giving us an insight on food in Germany - where are you located? I ask this because I lived in Germany for a while back in the sixties.

Moin Bailey! I live in a small village Helle, somewhat north of Bad Zwischenahn. In the 1970s, and the early 1980s, we had many contacts to the DJs of AFN-Bremerhaven, our Harley-Buddy, Mr. Mike Jungk, used to be a moderator at the Bremerhaven-AFN. We had a good time back then, it was my first chance, to get in contact to americans, to talk and read american-english, there were very good, and also very bad experiences, I do not like to recall them, they are history... CU in Germany! Michael

I lived in Schweinfurt and Wurzburg - every weekend we would travel to different places around Germany and just take in the history of the cities. It's an amazing country - and the food is incredible - my favorties were the schnitzel and the brochen.

Moin! "my favorties were the schnitzel and the brochen. " Aha, was it perhaps a "Broetchen", a crosty bread-bun, as we call it here in Germany? Did you serve your time as a GI in Germany, like so many soldiers, and YES, I like our german Schnitzel as well... http://www.chefkoch.de/rs.0/schnitzel/Rezepte.html Take Care! Michael

Brochen or broetchen - it was very tasty- it came from the bakery in mesh bags - it was some good stuff. Crusty on the outside and the inside was tender - a little butter on it and it was heaven--

This summer our local restaurant Karl Ratzsch's had a luncheon special of currywurst and it rocked! http://www.karlratzsch.com/index.htm I hope they serve it again. I'd be interested in hearing how you find their menu.

Moin is a greeting used mostly in Northern Germany. It is often used to say Good Morning or Hi. Most of the times that Michael used it, he was posting early in the morning German time.

Hello David! Thank you for the mp3 file, here in northern germany the AFN-Bremerhaven radio station is missed by many fans, who grew up in the 1950s, 1960s, 1970s... I earlier years AFN Bremerhaven broadcastet the legendary "Wolfman Jack" latenight radio shows, pure fun for us young listeners! Moin! http://www.dict.cc/?s=moin Moin! is a plattdeutsch (low german) salutation, we use this 24/7, at every time of the day, even late in the evening. Moin-Moin! Michael

Moin David! In the middle 1980s, our AFN-Bremerhaven DJ, Army Sergeant Mike Jungk used to respond, we had the direct telefon-number up to his studio at the AFN in Bremerhaven... We called for a song, Mike broacasted it 15 Minutes later over the AFN, with best whishes, "for the german friends, down under over there". You will love this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6QSA_ofvAnw Kind regards! Michael ,

Moin David! Thanks for the links, were you stationed over here in Germany, as a member of the american forces? You even were able to answer the "Moin!" question, so I think, you spent some time over here... Kind regards from Germany! Michael
