We have two days in Newport and hope there is roadfood available. Any thoughts will be greatly appreciated.

RI's a tiny state and nothing is very far apart - look into some of the references in past posts here - there's been a lot of them. Across the bridge from Newport is a place called Jamestown - a kind of de-classe Newport, I don't know but it seems like a kind of roadfoody place. Cheers, John

In Newport, Gary's Handy Lunch on the far end of Thames Street is probably as close as you'll find, at least downtown. It's a locals diner-type place, with a good menu, lots of daily specials and good prices. The Smokehouse Cafe, or something similar, is right on America's Cup Ave, but it's not overly expensive and has pretty good barbeque. A bit more upscale but still not outrageous, Laforge Restaurant & Pub at the old Newport Casino, on Bellevue Ave, is a good spot, especially for brunch. It is a sister establishment to one in Ireland, and even has an Irish brunch once a month. Just outside of Newport is Becky's Real Barbq, on East Main Road (Rte 138) in Middletown. It's on a commercial drag in what looks like someone's house. I've never been but it gets consistently good writeups. There's also an IHOP just down the road if that interests you. Since Jamestown's been mentioned, try Jamestown Oyster House on Narragansett Ave, another locals place for good, relatively inexpensive seafood, and, right across the street, the Narragansett Cafe for live music and drinkin' with the townies.

Heather and I stayed overnight at the Rose Island Lighthouse. Our only meals out that weekend were to Tucker's Bistro-fabulous Shepherd's Pie (not on menu any more) and Heather had duck...interesting chef and menu http://www.tuckersbistro.com/ Also Aidan's Pub & Eatery, downtown on Thames St., is a traditional Irish Pub, with great fish and chips. Heather remembers the sizzling platter of steak and gravy she ordered. Newport Storm is a very well made local beer, especially Newport Storm Hurricane Amber Ale. This is Rhode Island's only microbrewery http://www.newportstorm.com Sakonnet Vineyards is located in nearby Little Compton,RI http://www.sakonnetwine.com/ DaveM

I have one word for Newport- Salas- inexpensive good Italian and Seafood. If you make it to Wickford , try Duffy's Tavern for fantastic seafood or Champlin's in Gallilee near the block island ferry. You don't want BBQ in Rhode Island, that's for the South or Kansas City, you want ITALIAN, SEAFOOD OR PORTUGUESE!!

The Brick Alley Pub, at the end of the Brick Marketplace, is always good. Kid friendly, too. Sometimes, there's a wait, but usually worth it. Great soups and sandwiches.

Thanks to all for the info--we intend to try Jamestown--anyone heard of Chopmist Charlie's? It was recommended by others that suggested Salas and Tucker's. We'll sure get to Gray's Ice Cream and are sorry that The Commons in Little Compton is not available. Thanks again.

The Mooring on Sayer's Wharf... ...loved by locals and tourists, alike, with a great bar and patio -- either suited for enjoying their delicious lobster dishes.

At Galliee, go to Aunt Carrie's for clamcakes and RI clam chowder, best in RI. Champlins has good clamcakes, chowder and they also have the freshest catch of the day - they ship too. Duffy's Tavern in Wickford is great.

Aunt Carrie's is now closed for the season, unfortunately.
