Help in Georgia to Ansul or Not to Ansul

Hey Yall- I've been lurking for about a week now. A lot of great info on this site. I figured, I'd go ahead and step out there. I have a concession trailer that is totally electric, because of my power limitations I have not used it nearly as much as I would like. I have only done special events, fairs, etc. I was thinking of converting my large appliance (fryer and flat top grill) over to propane. My question will I need an ansul system here in Georgia or can I get away with the fire extenguisher (sp). Also does anyone know of a place I can get this conversion done on the east side of Atlanta. I was looking at purchasing a generator, but whoa......that was a lot of money. I am looking for my most economical route here. I do have a roof vent that just sucks air out. Renting a generator can get expensive, especially when you work an event that is not profitiable. Thanks for all of your input. I am sure I will have loads of questions later.

A lot of the trailers we have seen at festivals do no have an Ansul system. One particular trailer we have set up next to several times only has a standard kitchen exhaust hood. Some of the larger festivals may require a Fire Dept. inspection but most do not. There is a place in Dawsonville that will install one. They usually have a concession trailer for sell on Craigslist. Power needs is always a problem at smaller festivals. Our trailer can run off 25 amps. (Ice shaver, air conditioner, freezer, etc.) If we are using the sandwich press we can either not use the air conditioner or purchase extra power. If you plan on using a generator then you need a quiet one like the Honda, very few festivals will allow a noisy generator. Hopefully by next year we will have a Honda EU3000 mounted on the trailer tongue to supplement our power needs.

Ok. Thanks. So then I should call the fire department to verify, one way or the other. I think I have seen propane used without the ansul too, I just can't be sure. Either way, I will get a bigger fire extinguisher. Any ideas of a place to call to get the propane lines installed. Gas is not something I want to play around with. I was thinking ease of Atlanta, ie, Covington, Stockbridge, Conyers. Jody, who is your contact in Dawsonville? Thanks again for all the help.

I agree - you need to contact your local (where the event is) fire marshall. Here in CT we don't need ansul because we don't have any customers in the trailer. That may be the case where you are but don't chance it and ask you rfire marshal. They lik eit when you ask before doing anything. Most fire marshals do want a licensed plumber to run your gas lines. Most of the parts for tanks and regulators can be bought from an rv dealer parts counter. You will need the proper restraints and quick connects for your appliances with gas. those can be bought from the webstaurantstore.com or wherever you get your fryer and flattop. Not sure if you can convert the ones you have from elect to gas.

Ok, so it's a plumber that would install it. I can search that way. I was thinking much more complicated than that. I won't actually be converting the appliances, I will be buying new to me LP appliances. Not using the electric ones at all. Thanks for the response.

Any RV dealership can help you with the gas lines. If you call the FD they are going to quote you the law. Check out a few festivals around you and look at their operation. Generally we are the only commercially built concession trailer at the festival we attend. Most are homemade and none have ansul or even commercial exhaust hoods. Unless you plan on doing the Yellow Daisy or something similar no one is going to check your setup. Just keep a safe operation and keep a couple of decent fire extinguishers on hand.

Good advice on the RV dealership. Thanks. I did speak with a retired Fire Chief (Atlanta), he called around and made some inquiries, off the books. They are currently very lienent with having an absolute fire suppression system installed in a mobile unit now, however they foresee making it mandated in a few years.

Last year when I was getting the CO for my commissary the fire marshals office for Cobb Co. gave me a list of local businesses that install fire suppression and hoods. Don't know about your county but is may be a place to start. Uncle Bud
