Help in Savannah, GA

I am heading out in a few weeks and noticed that the offerings on the site were slim...any ideas for the Savannah area...BBQ is my favorite...but anyplace that has a good burger & ice cold beer would win me over as well.

We enjoyed the food and the friendly service at Sweet Potatoes, when we stopped in Savannah about a year ago. As much attention is paid to the sides as the mains.

Sorry, I'm of little help.  I've spent a lot of time in Savannah and Tybee but don't remember any BBQ or burgers.  Johnny Harris above is a very big and good Roadfood type place that serves lots of things in addition to BBQ.

Best restaurant in Savannah GA! And NO I have no affiliation what so ever with them! Never had a burger there. Don't even know if they serve burgers. Check out their menu at their website!
 
But if you DO find a great burger place in Savannah please be sure to post! I've recently made a committment to MYSELF to FIND the BEST burger (cheese burger!) in Brevard County FL (and Orlando area) !!!! HELP!!! Happy Eating! KokomoJoe

If the Breakfast Club on Tybee Island is still in business be sure and go there.  They will have some kind of a good sandwich whether or not a burger.  It is only about half an hour from down town.

The Breakfast Club was still there when I walked by a few months ago.  Love's is great, although it is some distance outside of Savannah.  Lady & Sons gets mixed reviews, but every one should try it once. 

Please look up Mrs.Wilkes Boarding House on Jones Street in Savannah. It is the real deal as far as Southern cooking goes and you will not be standing in line as long as you will for Lady & Sons!  Food is wonderful, they serve family style so you just pass the bowl as you would at home. I urge you to give it a try

The Crab Shack is definitely the place to go on Tybee Island...
I thoroughly enjoyed the "Shack Specialty" a huge platter of fresh seafood . I've been there twice, and this past February it was still good.

I found Mrs Wilkes to be extremely ordinary.. It's family style, and if you have enough time its definitely worth checking out at least from an historical vantagepoint but keep in mind the food is far from mind blowing

I am one of the folks who had an excellent experience at Lady and Sons, however it was almost 5 years ago, and I did go on an early Sunday Afternoon if that helps.   I actually found the food there  superior to the much touted Blue Willow Inn in Social Circle GA

We just spent a week in Tybee in April and hit a couple of spots that I thought were good.  For a nice upscale dinner in Tybee the Sundae Cafe is excellent.   I got the seafood platter and it was huge.  I think there were 8 or 9 each of fried shrimp and scallops, a pile of fried oysters, a nice piece of fish (might have been grouper) and a crab cake.  I am a big eater and i didn't even get close to finishing.  Though that was probably becasue I also had the seafood cheesecake for an appetizer which was very rich.  The only complaint was the breading on the scallops was sliding off.  Next time I would probably just get the shrimp and oysters as a combo.

The other place I thought was good was Papa's BBQ in Savannah on the road headed towards Tybee (80 E).  It is in a strip mall right next to a Publix and a Wal-mart.  I was a little hesitant with it being in a strip mall but I guess it's been in the area since the 70s and recently moved to the strip mall across the street from the old location.  I had the BBQ sandwich on toast.  It was a minced style and I really enjoyed the sauce which had a mustardy vinegar taste to it.  Looked like a lot of regulars and the owner was out chatting with a lot of them.  It also seemed like a good place to get a couple of beers and hang out.

We went to Lady and Sons last year and thought it was kind of fun but not the best food we've had in the South.  Though there were a couple of highlights.  The mac and cheese was pretty close to the top of all we tried on that trip and the sweet potato gooey butter cake was very good.  But we did not think it was good enough to go back again this year. 

Sweet Potatoes gets my vote  for  wonderful food..................a Roadfood place for sure.  Every single thing that we have eaten there has been  wonderful.................an added bonus is that it is  "dirt cheap".  For  more upscale in Savannah, we do love the Private House....................love the history behind it and the food is excellent.

Bubba's is on the road out to Tybee.  It is on a riverfront and offers inside and outside dining with a beautiful view. This is Paula Deen's brother and the location of many"Party with Paula" episodes.  They are a mainly a seafood place with many other entrees, IE; fried chicken, steak, burgers.   The steaks and burgers are char/flame cooked.  (my favorite)  They also have fried pickles.  Bubba is often there and very friendly to the customers, often posing with them for pictures.  There are signed copies of Paula's cookbooks available at the counter.  Very casual and family friendly.

Barnes Restaurant on Water St has great BBQ, especially the brisket.  This is an inexpensive family restaurant with a huge selection.  I've never been disappointed.  I was concerned this may be part of a chain (it has the bunk house kind of atmospere) but I couldn't find any others on line so I have added it to the list.

For breakfast a lot of the locals love "Larry's". Its on Skidaway Road about 2 blocks south of Victory DR.

We will be going to Tybee Island in August and visiting Savannah.  I am very much looking forward to eating at the local restaurants.  One thing I haven't noticed is much for breakfast.  Do you have any suggestions for Tybee for breakfast and is there any decent BBQ on the island?

Just returned from an extended weekend getaway to Savannah and used this thread amongst others in charting the following culinary course of recommendations:
 
  Mrs. Wilkes Boarding House (LUNCH)...While I know that Greymo is not a fan (and whose opnion I truly trust), this may be one of the best lunches I've ever had. Simply fantastic. Twenty-six different southern food offerings on the table and ALL delicious (including fried chicken, rutebegas [sp?], greens, sweet potatoes, biscuits, mashed potatoes, etc.). To Greymo's credit, I could see where sharing a table with a tribe of gluttons and at this family-style restaurant may make it less than appealing but I've got to tell you, this was one of the best meals we had in Savannah.
 
  Olde Pink House (LUNCH)...Outstanding. Was originally threatened by the whole colonial feel thing but lunch proved more informal nevermind al fresco and salads with both grilled shrimp and fried chicken proved more than scrumptious. I'd go back for the cheese sticks, alone!
 
  Crystal Beer Parlor (DINNER)...We opted for a casual meal here and weren't disappointed with the high level of quality of this neighborhood joint. Great beers, great service and great food in this quintessential beer joint.
 
  Sapphire Grill (DINNER)...I think this was recommended by Frommers and it located directly next to Paula Deen's Lady & Sons restaurant (which we specifically avoided following mixed reviews on this site and seemingly all negative reviews by locals once we got on the ground in coastal Georgia) and while perhaps not a "road food" restaurant," good-googily-moogily this was a FANTASTIC dinner of regional fare including locally caught and grilled shrimp as well as sesame seed-encrusted black grouper. Again, fantastic.
 
 
Breakfasts were at our inn but we did stop by Clary's and would look forward to hitting such next time we're in the "garden of good and evil."

Glad to hear you enjoyed Mrs. Wilkes more than I did. Unfortunately I found everything there very ordinary when I visited earlier this past year and especially found their fried chicken to be dissappointing.. It's a shame you didn't hit Lady and Sons.  I hit it on a Sunday afternoon and there were more locals sitting near me that headed there right after church, of course sitting at the bar may have had something to do with that!  Although it's been 5 years since I last visited I thought that Lady and Sons simply blew Mrs Wilkes right out of the water. In fact if I recall it was the good folks here at Roadfood who told me to avoid Mrs Wilkes and go to Lady and Sons when I initially asked for suggestions.
 
I've heard about Old Pink House, it sounds intriguing, when/if I ever return to  Savannah, I would certainly check it out.

I really am glad that you enjoyed Mrs. Wilkes.  You must have been  seated at a table with less hungry "locals" than  we were.  Heck, I never even had a chance to snatch a piece of chicken before it was all gone!
 
The concierge at our hotel once gave us a very short list of what he considered the best eating in Savannah and the Sapphire  Grill was on that list. His list  was terrific as on it was The Sweet Potato,  a place that  we really  love.  I hope that when you go there again, you will have to opportunity to eat there.

Although it's been 5 years since I last visited...

Such may be precisely the point as every single local we consulted with prefaced their disappointment with Lady & Son by saying, "that it USED to be good (but has really gone down hill)..." Upon visiting the Homage to Paula Deen, er...Lady & Son gift shop, I actually snuck in and walked right up to the highly-institutional looking buffet table and such only confirmed that we were right to go to Mrs. Wilkes. (On a related perhaps interesting note, apparently when President Obama was in Savannah earlier this year [January?], he sent his advance team to Lady & Son but actually ate at Mrs. Wilkes. Read into that what you will!)

We would've hit it this time but such was outside the historic district and we were in town without a car. That said, Sweet Potato clearly has many fans on this site.

If I ever had an event in Savannah, the Olde Pink House and its gorgeous upstairs private rooms would definitely be the place!

Spent a few years recently in Savannah. Not as good a restaurant town as I had hoped but some good choices, many mentioned above. I would say the Lady and Sons is worth going to for sure. It is certainly possible to get a very good meal there and can be fun. Also try her brother's restaurant Uncle Bubba's as mentioned above.
B&D Burgers probably has the best burgers in Savannah. Although an excellent choice for a very good upscale burger is the bar upstairs at the Mansion on the Park, which is an excellent place for a drink or to hear some jazz most nights and a good casual place to eat very good food. You can get food from their bar menu and also from the restaurant downstairs.
In Savannah also try Clarys (two locations) for breakfasts and burgers. On Broughton check out Tanners. Its an interesting hot dog place with split personalities. Still serving southern style dogs, often deep fried. But because of theowner who is from Chicago they also serve Vienna hot dogs Chicago style and have Vienna Italian beef sandwiches available.
 
Also, although not authentic, a very good choice for pizza iand Italian subs is Screamin Mimi's on Habersham. Very good New Jersey style food.

I'm being honest no shenanigans here, I don't think I mentioned anything specific about Ms Wilkes, and I know I certainly didn't rave about the meal,  although the company was fine, the meal wasn't nasty or anything like that  it was just "OK" it certainly wasn't one of the more memorable meals of the year, or even on that particular trip.  Keep in mind I enjoyed an amazing soul food meal at the unfortunately short lived Highland  Mills Cafe in Charlotte NC (still a strong contender for a top ten list)  a couple of days earlier so it's possible that may have hindered my taste buds.

Oh, I should've mentioned such a drinking destination as, indeed, we did stop by the Mansion on Forsyth Park (700 Drayton Street and due east from that fountain [which I'm sure has a name] so symbolic of Savannah and atop the lovely Forsyth Park) and not their small downstairs bar contiguous with the hotel's lobby but the separate bar called Casimir's Lounge located directly above the hotel's restaurant and reachable by ascending a leopard-print-carpeted stairway [I kid you not].) The place was awesome and rivaled the aged swank of places like NYC's Monkey Bar. Mrs. i95 opted for some sort of espresso martini and I had the place's signature martini named the Drayton something and featuring Absolut Citron vodka, peach schnapps and a splash of each orange and cranberry juice (oh, and served in a CHILLED martini glass). First rate!
