Help with building concession trailer Thu, 03/3/11 10:57 AM (permalink)
Hello all.  I am new to this community.  Have been in the food business for some time now but am starting a new project for a business associate of mine.  We are building a concession trailer for a lot in NYC.  It is a rather large unit, 27'X8.5'.  I am looking for help with my water systems.  I know I will need a fresh water tank, waste water tank, water heater, pump and backflow prevention, but I don't where to begin with this.  Is there any information or guidance that you can help me with in regards to this?  I am hoping there is somewhere that I can buy a full system rather than buy piece by piece.  IS is better to just go to a plumber for all this?  Any help is appreciated.

I'm new here myself  and I have built my own concessoins van, I would have to say if you can afford a plummer than that would be the way to go. But it alway better D.I.Y and no what you got under the hood. I found a lot of the material that I need thur out the state of Indiana as there is a lot of trialer manufactures there and some wholesale warehouses that have all the parts for a reasonable price. And went to Home Depot to get copper tubing and some of the supplys. I got my hot water tank, gray tank and freash water tank out of Indiana. Just search the web for camper parts,or motor home parts in  Indiana. I hope this help you. Mike
I thought that I'd just add that a lot of trailer manufactures have gone  out of business there, and a lot of supply warehouses buy up the inventory and sell at a reduced price. So call around and find your best deal. they may help you with your project and no what you need to compete.

well...... if your paying a plumber to do it, your going to pay hundreds of dollars for someone to do something you can easily do yourself with a little research....

not to mention the 40% or so mark up on all the equipment he puts in.... save yourself a few hundred bucks, possibly a thousand or more...... do some research, embrace the aggravation of the tuff stuff as a golden learning experience, ask us here, and locally all the questions you need to, and stand proud that you did it yourself when you get done, you will also realize that you will know your trailer inside and out like the back of your hand when things do go wrong and no one is around to help......

many on here are glad to help out and most of us actually know what were talking about, lol

above all.....dont burn yourself out, have fun with it and COOK GOOD FOOD !!

dont fret too much over piecing together a system......doing so will let you put the best pieces in for what you really need, and not settling for the best compromise that someone else put together that may have no idea what you actually need or are working with

I just picked up most of the major parts for my trailer build. They all came from my local rv dealer who sells parts as well. If your local dealer repairs rv's he is a good source of advice. You will pay his markup on parts but he see's all this rv stuff all the time amd can tell you what manufacturers parts last longer. I agree that putting it together yourself is priceless because if it breaks you now how to fix it yourself. Don't be a slave to any overpriced plumber unless you have one in the family or a true friend you can trust.

My cousin is a plumber and the only thing he is doing in my trailer is going to be the gas lines which he will supervise me. My local fire marshall requires the sign off of a licensed plumber on that. Most plumbers will not work with you on something like this but make you pay them to do it for you. Luckily I am bigger than my cousin so he lets me do what I want.

go here, and look at my water system, it's not rocket science.  it's quite simple actually, can have it up and running in 3 hours.

I've been doing my research and I'm definitely going to build it myself.  I was having doubts about the plumbing if only because that's one area that I've never done any work in.  But after searching this site for a day, I've found out almost everything I need to know about building the water system.  I set up a meeting with the Health Dept here in NYC and should get all the necessary information regarding size of the tanks but the actual build of the system is getting me really excited.  All you who told me to do it myself if only to know the ins and outs of my trailer fully really helped convince me that its the right way to go about it.  I'm sure you'll be hearing from me with more specific questions at certain points in the build.  Thank you

not a bad idea, but just your build took up 17 pages and 481 posts....might get a bit mind numbing looking for a particular pic or post....
how hard would it be to petition the admins to create a truck/trailer build forum ?

BAB, I'm going to build a trailer for my BBQ vending business. I have a trailer (behind a 30' deep snow bank) that I'm going to build a "shack" looking setup. I've been shopping plumbing options and the cheapest I've found are at this site

MY HD inspector requites a 35 gal holding tank and a 40 gal gray water tank.

                        Good Luck,
