Help with sardines Wed, 03/25/09 9:06 PM (permalink)
I brought back from Greece a 1/2 kilo tin of salted sardines. I opened them tonight. They're dry and salty. After rinsing off the salt, they're still scaly and salty.  What am I supposed to do with these fishies?

    Give 'em to your cat.

Unless someone else has had experience specifically with salt sardines, I would guess you could probably treat them and use them like salt cod, making cakes, chowder, etc.

Here is a recipe using salted sardines with pasta:

Soak them in water and change the water several times to remove the excess salt------then feed them to the cat!!

Feeding them to the cat would only bring PETA down on my ass.

Crab bait!! I am thinking that the high stink factor will attract the crab!! Then it's crab boil.

That would go on an appetizer platter with other greek appetizer foods, feta, stuffed grape leaves, kalamata olives.  Pick and eat and drink.

Maybe you can find your answers here at the Sardine Society.

I looked at all the pictures at your suggested website, Davydd, and without exception, they all look MUCH better than mine.  When I got home this afternoon, the house stunk of fish, so it's all gone now.
