Any Biz that can not support paying labor to work it. Is not worth being in.

Company owners hire people to make money OFF them. Hiring help should not COST you anything. Hiring labor should MAKE you money.

You want to be a small time one man show? If so then do it. Just, when you wander why you are not getting rich. You have no one else making YOU money.

    Hey Matt,

Your REAL question here is how to /where to find the right person to oversee your stand. BUT this is not "just" a hot dog stand...this venture will be the culmination of your inner vision of a hot dog utopia, right ? Hey, I'm hip with that and I'm picking up what your laying down. Your the type of guy who analyzes and observes little ( and big) details in an operation, formulating ideas that would improve the business if it were yours. I do it all the time, from color schemes, to menu offerings, to obvious PR moves.

There is no easy answer to your question, but this approach might work : Find someone who you can share your vision with. I would be bluntly honest with said person about wages and conditions (and your expectations) and after all the bad news, I would also be bluntly honest about monetary compensation increasing along with sales and specific target goals.

I think someone would work a lot harder if your going to give them a piece of your dream. It will be tough to find the right person though in any event.

Good Luck on your endeavor !

If it were I. Just Financing the operation. I would find somone that WANTS to work for them self. Someone that WANTS to make Hotdogs for 8 hours a day.

I would lay down the pay real simple. They get a %. No min wage deals or anything. They will runt he cart the way you as the capitol owner see fit. Then they will make a % of the revenue till things get lined out and set. Then at that time you will retalk about wages.

When I started my Mowing company. I tried paying guys to do the 60 lawns a week. I had bad turn over for the 2 man crew.

I had a guy come to me that wanted a % and the ability to market. I said fine. I was so fed up, I was ready to just say quit. I was making money, BUT I was always having to hire a new person and get them trained. The customers suffered.

HE STILL works with me. Mowing 100 lawns a week with 3 folks getting his percentage (the two laborers get a weekly salary). We have added 2 more crews as well each doing the same. The formen gets percentage.

The wife and I have been looking at getting a new Dog stand as well. We have a woman that approched us. She is a single mother that can work 7 am till 7 pm. She wants percentage. She also has the county health cert.

Not sure what we will do yet, just having a person making 7 bucks a doing all the work and see the cash come in. They will in my opinon not last long. I say give them a reason to be nice, sell more and make sure there income is able to rise. When their actions can make them more money in % of income. They will also use their heads to make more sells.

Hey matt...did you ever get your stand off the ground? I think i understand what your passion is...you like to plan and "dream" the dream....not a requirement that you actually work it. you just want to see if the idea would've worked. nothing wrong with that. i think the percentage cut is the way to go, otherwise that employee has no personal stake in the opperation.

WOW! FINALLY someone here who understands how I think. You nailed it BigCab. I also agree with your advice.

To that end, I've been talking to a friend who's in the hotdog business (The one I've mentioned before with the Chicago style dog shop in a nearby town who brands with Vienna). He wants to expand his business into other locations and I'm trying to come up with a plan so we can work together to see both our visions come to fruition.

What I have at this point is a total package concept that includes a pre-built structure (can be set up as portable or fixed, depending on local regs), all equipment, all marketing materials, menu and product.
Every detail has been worked out, even down to a 24 hour loop of 100% original, royalty-free "theme" music intercut with product promos (think Sonic's closed circuit "radio" broadcasts). I think franchising the package is my best option all around.

By the way, I'm now using this screenname, which may or may not be the final name of my concept.

W-hutter; I agree with you that franchise is the way to go. It's not so much employees that you need to recruit at this point, but rather owner-operators that can get on your bandwagon.

Offer it as a lease franchise.
