Hoggy's In Receivership

Six of the seven Hoggy's barbeque places in Central Ohio shut down yesterday, according to the Columbus Dispatch, which reports that the seventh, in Gahanna, will remain open and be operated by the receiver.

Hoggy's was great when they started in Linworth. Expansion resulted, I thought, in a drop in quality.

I'm a City barbeque fan (but not for their brisket), and there's one around a couple of corners from me, but when Hoggy's first opened up I think their pulled pork and their brisket were better.  And I've never had better onion rings than those at Hoggy's.

I know you might not believe me but the best brisket in the state in my opinion is Giant Eagle Market Place in Upper Arlington. I bought a full brisket last month for a meeting. They smoke it onsite and gave me all the standing juice with it. It wasn't cheap 8.99 a lb I think. Maybe 10.99. It was one of the best I have ever eaten...Russ

I've not had the brisket from Giant Eagle but it would be hard in my opinion to beat out Ray Ray's brisket.  He's only open Friday-Sunday and the line can be up to 30 minutes long on a nice day but it is the best I've had around here by far.  He does his regular brisket on Friday and Saturday and the special grass fed brisket on Sundays.  I haven't even had a chance to try the grass fed yet but the regular is very good.  Also, last time I stopped by he had burnt ends that I wish he would make a regular menu item and not just an occasional special.

The last time I went to Hoggy's I thought it had gone way downhill.  I knew they were in trouble when they started offering an all you can eat lunch buffet.  It's too bad becasue it was pretty good at one time.   Never great but good.

Also, Weiland's on Indianola smokes meat on the weekends and their brisket CAN BE very good.  I've had some that was excellent and some that was kind of tough.

One of my Facebook friends alerted me to the fact!  I happened to go to the location on Fifth Avenue and Grandview (which I think is the flagship restaurant) off of the westernmost I-670 exit last April to check it out, but I wasn't too impressed, thinking the meat came from a can.

The original was on Ohio 161 in the Linworth section of Worthington. The Fifth Avenue location was second. The big one, and what became -- to all intents and purposes -- the "flagship" is the one in Gahanna. It's the one that remains open.
