Holiday in SoCal & AZ, part 1 Mon, 01/7/08 12:03 AM (permalink)
Amy & I took our annual trip to Southern California (Los Angeles area) to visit her folks, and with us we brought a long list of Roadfood wishes. Here’s the first chapter…

Sat. 12/22
Amy flew out to California early because of her schedule, and I followed today with a layover in Baltimore. I was quite surprised to find a bee-yoo-tiful food court in the airport, and curiously I queued up at Silver Diner for lunch. Silver Diner is a small chain of eateries in greater D.C., and I bought a grab-and-go salad (since I was planning on eating Roadfood for the rest of my vacation!). It was HUGE and very, very good; the citrus dressing and peanuts really made the meal. This bowl was 4 inches deep, and it took me 30 minutes to finish, no joke. They must’ve used an entire bag of baby spinach in this!

Amy was waiting for me at the Ontario airport, whisking me away for my first and favorite SoCal meal, fish tacos, at Baja Fish Tacos, 3664 S. Bristol St., Santa Ana. My plate was a carne asada taco (left), blackened fish taco (right), with fabulous black beans and tender rice:

Amy got the beer-battered fish taco and different salsas to share (the best was the spicy hot green tomatillo salsa in the middle):

Sun. 12/23
Amy had visited Crumbs, 9465 Santa Monica Blvd., in Beverly Hills for designer cupcakes, which reminded us of Billyboy’s review of Sugar Sweet Sunshine in NYC (Crumbs is also in NYC). Not surprisingly, Crumbs is in direct competition with another cupcake spot in L.A. called Sprinkles! Here’s the Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup(cake):

And the Crumbs box, which is perfectly in focus if you stand 10 feet from your computer…

Later, we met up with friends and went to Aroma Coffee & Tea Co., 4360 Tujunga Ave., Studio City for dinner. We sat on the outdoor patio, with tall propane heaters next to us (still chilly, though). After ogling this dessert case, I realized that we should’ve started with dessert, because we certainly didn’t have room after our meal:

We ordered two items to share, both delicious: the chicken & proscuitto panini…

and the goat cheese & walnut salad…

Mon. 12/24
Okay, on to the real business now: reviewing new RF places for the site! We don’t really think Pink’s is the be-all, end-all hot dog of L.A. (and I’m sooo glad that there are many of you who feel the same way!), and I’ve been eyeing Cupid’s for a couple of years now. There are a few of them around town, but we went to the stand at 20030 Vanowen St. in Canoga Park:

A formal review will follow later, but we got two dogs, one with relish, the other with chili, and they really hit the spot!

For Christmas Eve dinner, the family piled in the car and headed for Buca di Beppo, much to my future father-in-law’s chagrin (whose favorite is Romano’s Macaroni Grill). We think Buca is better, and it’s the only Italian chain that we’d visit. We had reservations at the store at 7500 Ventura Blvd. in Encino, and it was a hoot! First, an appetizer of spicy Arrabbiata pizza, with pepperoni, sausage, and caramelized onions:

Then an entrée of Veal Limone, an easy choice because of our current obsession with escarole and Tuscan beans:

Tue. 12/25
Cooking all morning, we sat down together for an early Christmas dinner of prime rib (with the cooking directions taken from the RF website, thank you friends!). Here’s my plate of (clockwise from left) prime rib with horseradish sauce, broccoli-cheese puff, fresh cranberry sauce, and the best Yorkshire pudding I’ve ever had:

Amy baked a Bourbon-Pecan Tart with Chocolate Drizzle that looked exactly like the one on the cover of the November issue of Cooking Light magazine:

And here’s a typical SoCal front lawn, decorated for the holidays with snowmen in Hawaiian attire!

More California and Arizona Roadfood to come! Stay tuned…

Chris and Amy, you are amazing! I think I need to sign on as your personal valet from now on!! That salad looked amazing. I haven't had a decent fish taco since I was touring in San Diego and L.A. about 7 years ago. That CRUMBS cupocakje looks mighty good, although I wasn't really impressed with the ones in NYC. How was your experience? Was it moist? What kind of frosting is on it? Thanks for the shoutout! I went to a Buca di Beppo at the Universal Skywalk(?) years ago and loved it. I have that same issue of Cooking Light magazine, but haven't worked up to making the tart just yet. Can't wait to see the rest!

A great report and some great looking food. I have never had a fish taco, but sure would like to try some.

What a great looking Christams Dinner. The pecan pie looked wonderful as I am sure it tasted wonderful too.

Also, I enjoyed the report because I was able to see your pictures. Some pictures I can't view.

            Thanks again.

As a former Long-Term resident of SoCal, I get a bit homesick when I see these great reports!! Keep them coming! Roadfood is definitly alive in the "Land of the Un-Ending Strip Mall"!

Oh fish tacos, I am so jealous. The Senor Fish in . . I think it's Eagle Rock is also wonderful; I ate myself silly on their shrimp tacos last year.

Oddly enough my inlaws also made prime rib for Christmas. Yorkshire pudding is on my list of things to try in the kitchen this year so I might be asking for pointers.

Amy, you are quite the little baker there miss. That looks delicious.

So glad you guys had a fun trip and a safe journey home.

Thanks for all the great pics and reports! Now you've made me want to try a fish taco!! The pastry case is amazing - are those frostings really good? So many of the ones in the grocery store bakeries taste just like Crisco whipped with sugar.

I live in Prescott, Arizona and am anxious to see your AZ reviews!

Well, my God, this is beautiful photography, and I am a pro. Most of what shows up is not worth the time to download, but these pix are well lit and IN FOCUS. What I would complain about is the camera shake, and here's my suggestion about that: Just shoot many, many of the same shot, holding your breath, and you'll probably get one with no shake. You are doing the right thing not using your flash. Put your elbows on the table. The color looks well adjusted as well. Tell us all, what camera are you using?

                        Chris & Amy,
As ever EXCELLENT stuff. [I can't be jealous though because you know where I was...]

Interesting that you mentioned Sprinkles!!! I went to one in Orange County last week. I was impressed with the pretty/hip/trendy/cool graphics & packaging etc... but NOT the prices (it's over $3 per cupcake!!!!).

I had a gorgeous red velvet and it was delicious. Weirdly they put this button/decoration thingie on top which looks good but is basically inedible (tasted like wax to me). Just FYI!

Looking forward to more from you, of course!!!!! Awesome stuff, great pics.

So far so good! Looks awesome, esp. the Pecan pie (OK, and the fish tacos, carne asada, black beans, pannini, dogs, Christmas dinner, etc.)

Great to see you guys this time around, look forward to the rest of the report!!

Scott, these are very kind and inspirational words coming from you! Photographing food for the site is always a chore and probably the most labor-intensive part of writing for RF (sorting through multiple shots, loading the best ones, adjusting them for color, posting to the site, etc.). In fact, I'd say that the most Amy & I argue over RF is photos! We use a Canon PowerShot A630 digital, 8.0 megapixels, and have it for almost a year. We're just getting the point where we understand why certain shots don't work, and we're getting much better with finding the best lighting, taking multiple shots, and keeping our elbows on the table. We had a great time at Art's Deli in L.A. (in Part II of our trip report) when the owner's wife saw us taking pictures of the food. She came over and showed us the best way to do it -- she pretty much took over! "A magazine just came in last week to take pictures, and this is the way they did it!" she explained. For the shots you're praising, I thank all the great lighting we happened to have -- because some of our other shots are doomed to be terrible because of the poor lighting inside the restaurant or wherever. Thank you again for all your tips, and we'll keep them in mind in the near future!

                                  nice clear pics! great report!

Cupcake places are "in" right now..
I tried a few of them in NYC , like the Crumbs place (liked it), and Burgers and Cupcakes on 23rd st(much too sweet)
I've also run into encounters with dry cupcakes..

I used to live in L.A., and I miss all the hamburger stands, all the "Steve's Burgers", Jim's Burgers, type of places; they usually have a nice charcoal taste, even if they are a bit thin....
fast food style, but cooked to order...

                                  burgers for breakfast!!
Not to mention decent heuvos rancheros!
