Homemade Jucy Lucy Burger Mon, 06/22/09 3:04 PM (permalink)
Minnesota is the home of the Jucy Lucy, a stuffed burger with cheese. It is probably known as a stuffed burger outside Minnesota. Several restaurants have been featured recently on the cable TV food shows. Guy in Diners, Dives and Drive-ins visited Casper and Runyon's The Nook in St. Paul and Adam in Man vs. Food visited Matt's Bar and the 5-8 Club in Minneapolis. So, I decided to try making my own for lunch and endulge myself.

I smashed two flat 4 oz. patties of 85/15 hamburger and sandwiched in three small brick slices of medium cheddar cheese leaving enough room to pinch down and blend the patties around the edges to keep the cheese encased. I then grilled it in a skillet without smashing it any further and served it on a bun with mayo, lettuce, tomato and onion.

The trick is to bite into a Jucy Lucy delicately but the burly way so you don't get burned by the molten cheese or have it squirt out all over you. That's part of the experience or you might as well order a regular cheeseburger.  For you, I sliced it in half first to show you the construction.

I used to make them all the time. I fell in love with Jucy Lucy years ago when visiting my friend who lives in Minneapolis. I make a point to eat at least one whenever I’m up there. I’ll be up in September.

Anyway, I usually use cheddar or blue cheese. I have also used mozzarella and gouda. I have made them 2 different ways…using two thin patties…and also the “ball method.” Both work fine.

    Anyway, yours looks great.

While that certainly looks absolutely DELICIOUS and I would very happily gobble it right down, I'm not sure it can rightfully be called a Jucy Lucy unless it contains only unidentifiable, possibly government issue cheese! the same kind that Liquor Lyle's used for thier happy hour snack  Block of cheese and bucket of herring....

I made some myself last week utilising the dreaded Velveeta. It was fantastic. I appreciate and eat good cheeses but my mother never allowed Velveeta in the the house. My first wife never bought any, so it probably wasn't until I reached the age of 50 before I ever tasted it (I've still never tasted Spam!). I find Velveeta my sinful guilty pleasure and a Juicy Lucy is my favorite way to have this rare (for me) treat.

              Next up, Spam.

Some time ago, I posted a Juicy Lucy that I made. You have trumped my version and given me a new goal and level to shoot for. Excellent photo with just a hint of pink.

Both halves of the burger look as if they are sticking their tongues out at us.

Thanks to both Davydd and Ann.
I promise to try Spam soon.
Patrick Cudahy used to make a product called Hamdingers that Mrs MFL thinks was a Spam clone but it was round instead of a rectangle.
