Try looking in the yellow pages of your area for tortilla factories or molinos, which means mill in Spanish.
My sister who lives in Piermont,NY has the same problem trying to find tamales. That's one of the benefits for living in the Southwest,we have all kinds of mexican bakeries and tortilla factories and such to buy stuff from.

I tried the yellow pages, but they mostly list Manufactors or Distributors of tortillas, I am hoping to find small grocers or restaurants that would carry them. Hopefully without having to go into NYC. thanks.

I know you want NJ, but if you can make a trip to NYC you will get it. I know Kitchen on 8th Ave & 20th St sells masa, probably a tortilla maker, and green chile to go one top! It's a great store for SW and Mex items.

yes, they have takeout, good stuff, lots of it. A hot counter is in the middle of the store. A few kinds of burritos, posole, etc. I think they also (or used to) make food for the restaurant next door. Its a fun place - they sell a lot of things from Mexico: Mexican sodas, kitchen supplies, "toys", etc. Also other Latin American foodstuff, but my favorite is the Southwest US section - chile, etc. Try it and report to us!!!

Sad but true, I just read that the restauirant next door "Bright Food" is closed!!! I loved the place - it was promoted as TexMex-Asian Fusion - strange as that seems, really the TexMex and Asian foods were separate (tho the neighborhood is known for Cuban-Chinese restaurants, so maybe its not that odd). Anyway, it looked like a traditional diner (but upscale) but the food was very creative, and delicious. So now I must go to KItchen to get my fix!!!

Ok, would have posted this earlier, but needed to take a pic. I pick this up at my local grocer for around 3 bucks. Right next to the assorted flour they sell.

That Quaker guy looks great on masa. Is there a big Mexican community in Philadelphia? (well at least PA in near NJ!)

Not sure about a Mexican community in the Pa area but I know they had a great one in Kansas City when I lived out there...not that that'w gonna be much help here.

As far as homemade tortillas, why not try calling either "Hacienda" Mexican resturant in Berkeley Heights NJ (908-665-8565) or "Beana's" Mexican resturant in Rhaway (732-381-3233) to see if they may be able to help you find what you're looking for. Better yet I do recommend either place highly and suggest you take a trip to one of them when you're in the mood for good Mexican in Union County.
