I was intrigued by the all you can eat chicken fry at the restaurant in the Bee's RV Resort area on 27 in Clermont. $8.50 per person ... It is pretty much a cafeteria line and a cavernous room with long tables. My opinion: A good value, the chicken was very good. I liked the slaw and the apple sauce. The canned corn and powdered mashed potatoes disappointed. My friend was totally turned off the entire meal. Aside from the canned corn and potatoes, she thought the biscuit was hard to swallow, she was not impressed with the slaw or apple sauce and thought the chicken was standard-issue. They do offer baked potatoes.

I think your friend is probably correct. There sure is a lot of 'soft' food. Sounds like the seasonings are muted. It may be appropriate as I see that most of the customers have gray or blue hair. They will probably have a difficult time with hard biscuits and loose dentures. Oh wait!!! This is a RV resort in Florida. All is explained. mark

I agree with your friend. The horrid trays don't do anything for me, how clean can they be?

I have had better "military" food than what this looks like.

Actually, I am sure they use dishwashers on the tray. The place didn't strike me as unclean. You can't base your opinion about the look of the food based on my photography skills.

Gregg don't let them give you crap, it's exactly the kind of nutty place I'd want to try. I always want to stop for the church barbecue plates--I often don't but that's because I don't want it bad enough I guess. That doesn't always mean they have great food though. The biscuits *look* homemade, and that applesauce definitely looks homemade.

Greg, I'll trust your word, as always, but looking at the picture of the crowd (were you the youngest there - and was it after 4:30? ?), I suspect the food was a little on the bland side. All in all, though, a good bargain and the pics make it look tasty

Sorry, Gregg-just doesnt do anything for me at all. While the food may have been palatable, the trays turned me of, as did the pictures of people NOT enjoying themselves eating.Looks to me like a scene from "One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest" No offense.....

Jake! - You are going to bring down this entire site with this string of extended Smilies. According to one of our engineers (moderators), I put together a string of Smilies (far fewer than yours) and caused a blackout last month. So, now we should all blame you as this site goes down right about.....NOW

I'd eat it. And I'd go for seconds. And I'd make conversations with strangers. And it would be a blast.

Dearfolk, The photo reminds me of some surrealistic mess hall in a long-forgotten military base somewhere more obscure than Watford City, North Dakota. Any blandness of the food is probably due to the geriatric customer base. Me? As I approach 60 with both feet screeching, I find my tastebuds are still honed well and ready for the next workout of unbland food... Mamma Mia, gimme da spicy meat-a-ball! The tray was nothing more than a giant, partitioned, plate. I never said the food was bland. In fact the chicken breading had a little oomph and the slaw was tasty. The potatoes were out-of-the-box inedible, but I could have had a baked potato. I'm not defending the place ... just reporting. Ironically, my friend admitted she'll probably go back on Friday for the fish fry.

Greg, It seems that the food is getting worked over. If you go to the fish fry, could you show photos of that? A fish fry seems perfect as it is also seasoned and textured just right for this crowd. I am curious what the buffet looks like. I want to stare into the heart of the beast before I give a final judgment and say that it all comes from a package... I don't even trust the biscuits or applesauce. If you are a RVing snowbird, I thank you for giving me a heads up as the traveling life appeals to me. Someday I might be in that 'group' photo...On second thought, no I won't. mark

To be an RVing snowbird takes big bucks. The local RV campgrounds always have a lot of big RV's that cost hundreds of thousands of dollars not to mention fueling them.

I'm back in frosty Massachusetts. Fish fry will have to wait, but I do get down to FL often during the winter.

While there are some snowbirds with big bucks and expensive RV's, not all snowbirds fit into that group. My mom & dad were snowbirds for 15 years. They stayed at a small RV park near Crystal River, FL in an 28 ft 5th wheel trailer. There are many smaller RV parks all over Florida with snowbirds on a limited income, so this chicken dinner is great for those folks.

And I bet that they enjoyed themselves a lot more than some of the younger people posting here about white and blue hair. bland food, (how one determines that the food was bland is beyond me) loose dentures and faces that are not smiling. I would not be smiling either if someone was taking my picture (without permission) while I was trying to eat.

I would not be smiling either if someone was taking my picture (without permission) while I was trying to eat. Oh no, I see myself doing the RV lifestyle. People who know me think that I would thrive on a mobile existence and I agree. I find myself searching for both food service trailers and RV's, usually on the same sites. I think that they might be the perfect vehicle for the 'Okie' of today. For $8.50 and all you can eat, you get what you pay for. The square tray and the appearance of the food could qualify for the cover of Better Institutional Homes and Gardens. I still would like to see more pictures of the serving line and food. I don't think boring food is a requirement for old age. My mom eats better than me. I had my 94 yo granny eating Buffalo wings and a Thai coconut curry soup(Tom Ka Gai ). She mostly liked mooshy foods.... I was around her enough and my hair has been gray for some time that I can find some humor in advancing age. The one thing I learned is that you should brush your teeth and try to have some real ones until the end. ...and keep dancing. mark

Dearfolk, Y'all just gave me a great idea! -- If I ever manage to get my dream radio station on the air, we'll have to have a broken-down, unrunnable RV for remote broadcasts... our IMmobile unit! Threadbearly, Ort. Carlton in Well-Clad Athens, Georgia.

I just have to say that this is the funniest thread I've ever read...especially the comment about that photo looking like a scene from "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest." I think we should all give Gregg lots and lots of points for his bravery. This is, from what I've always heard, how good "finds" are made. That just didn't happen to be one.
