Horrible fire at Patrick Cudahy Mon, 07/6/09 7:29 PM (permalink)
Cudahy, a suburb of Milwaukee and home to the Patrick Cudahy Company is hurting. Residents in a one mile area have been evacuated due to a fire to this company that has existed since 1888, longer than the community that took its name from the sprawling plant. Over 8.5 million gallons of water have already been sprayed on this fire that started late Sunday night and one the fire chief as of 3:30pm Monday expects will last another 24 to 36 hours. The residents were evacuated when ammonia supplies were in danger of rupturing. Asbestos remains a threat if walls collapse. The plant is well known as a high end supplier of ham, bacon and lunch meats both under its own name and those of certain product lines such as Pavone Italian deli products and La Abuelita Mexican sausages. The plant hs 1,900 workers. Firefighters from communities from miles around have been fighting this fire which was visible throughout the metropolitan area. They have been trying to rotate these heros so they can be fed, hydrated and given 4 hours sleep before tackling the blaze again.

What a shame.  Just when things can't get much worse in this lousy economy.

Better stock up on bacon now.  Prices may take a jump.

Patrick Cudahy is owned by Smithfield Foods (the old Smithfield Packing). Hopefully they will not bail out of Milwaukee and move production elsewhere.

Last I heard, there were no injuries, which is a blessing.
