Hostess Big Wheels

Does anybody out there remember when the Hostess Ring Dings were called Big Wheels? I remember the box had a cartoon Indian on it, and I know for certain that they tasted better then the Ring Dings. Probabaly because they were foil wrapped. Remember that? Much tastier.

I think the Hostess products used to have more "creamy wholesome filling". I find them pretty boring now. And yes, I remember the foil wrappers!

Actually, it's Hostess Ding Dongs that were known as "Big Wheels", and only in the northeast. That was because of the legal conflict with Drakes' Ring Dings! Of course, now that Hostess and Drakes are owned by the same company (IBC), the Ding Dongs name can be used everywhere, and in fact, in the northeast, they along with Twinkies and some of the other products are actually made at the Drake Bakery! (You can tell, because they have a kosher logo, which none of the Hostess cakes have anywhere else. The beef fat is removed!) In 1987, when CBC had briefly owned Drakes, they had also introdiced the Dong Dongs brand here, and this is when the Big Wheels name disappeared for good. When the merger was broken up, Hostess went with the silly but more true-to-the-real-name compromise "King Dons" until the new merger.

Those foil wrappers, which were also on yodels, were great for making little canoes. I had a whole navy of them!
