Hostess Fruit Pies

Hi! All this talk of Tastykakes and Krispy Kreme has gotten me hungry. In any case, my favorite treat is a Hostess Fruit Pie - for some reason the glaze, crust, and "innards" seem perfect to me compared with the competition. Anyway, the only ones I can find recently are the Apple, Cherry (my fav), Lemon (good too), and Blueberry pies which see to be ubiquitous. But I have distinct memories of long ago eating a Peach version, and I've heard of the Strawberry, Pineapple, and of course the discontinued pudding pies. I've searched exhaustively online and the local hostess bakery only carries the four popular ones (but I still have to ask them about special orders) - has anyone seen these other flavors recently?

I have recently been able to purchase the blackberry ones here in Colorado. I like the peach ones best but you rarely see them. I like the lemon ones but can't find them.

The Blackberry is number 1 with me. I haven't had any kind for several years, but they sit in the Impulse row near the registers in a lot of convenience stores. This is one time that I would recognize the "Name Brand" All the imitations are yucky compared to the Hostess versions. I think I stopped buying them when the price doubled many years back.

A few times I've tried the Home Run Pies-----but they're no where near as good as the Hostess ones.

I use to frequent a drug store where they grilled the pineapple pies and topped them with ice cream. Really good. Paul E. Smith Knoxville, TN

Nothing like a fresh, still warm from the fryer, fried peach pie!!!

The best fried pies are the ones you can get fresh and hot at the Apple Barn in Pigeon Forge, TN. I have described this place on other threads and it is a huge tourist stop with a winery, bakery candy shop, two restaurants, motel and several huge gift shops. You can get great ice cream with your fried pie and great coffee. The restaurants serve a apple cocktail, apple fritters and apple butter with every meal. Breakfast there is super and the fried chicken is wonderful. Paul E. Smith Knoxville, TN

>> I think I stopped buying them when the price doubled many years back. Now you can buy 2 for $1 at most stores - pretty good to me! Probably the only way you can buy 1000 calories for $1. I will post my results once I get ahold of the other flavors. They need a variety basket just like the Tastykake.com one... I agree, homemade fried pies from the local tourist/farms/fairs are even better, but as far as mass-market pies go Hostess rules. I did have a Dolly Madison Cherry Pie and it was pretty good. Steve

The ultimate self-destruct: coffee and a Hostess cherry pie at 7-11. And I'm not joking. I really found some cherries in a pie one time. . . .

Just an update. I went to the local Hostess Bakery store here in Rochester and the guy working there said that Hostess only makes the apple, cherry, lemon, and blueberry pies now. All the other flavors are discontinued. I still don't believe it and am hoping that he just means his own store can't get them and was confused. If you see a peach, strawberry, or blackberry pie out there buy it and ship it to me so I can prove him wrong! I'll pay all costs! Note to self: Reason #214 to build a time machine...

smiles, I wonder if the fruit choices are seasonal, and they only use what is available locally, although I would think that most of the fillings are canned, not fresh. Maybe there is only a demand for certain flavours in certain seasons. Hey, too any good diners with home-made pies along West Henrietta Road to blow the calories on Hostess. Drive a few miles north to Jay's diner and have some real pie.

I just checked out the IBC store here in Knoxville. They don't have the donuts(raspberry filled powdered sugar ones) but they did have some peach Hostess fried pies, and I spied one lemon one too.

all this talk got me hungry, so i took a stroll to the office vending machine and saw a Drake's Cake apple pie. 25 cents later I had my pies. I have not had these in years, and am glad to say they are still pretty damn good. Tasted nice and fresh and cinnamon sugary with bits of real apple. Pretty damn tasty.

Thanks ToddH - I'll have to mention it to the people and see what they say. Berndog may be right, they may be seasonal, or perhaps, even geographical and they just don't have them here. I was under the impression that there was a central location and everything was shipped to these distributors, but the guys at the Hostess store here made it sound like they had every single thing Hostess makes in their stockroom. It was interesting to see these big crates of the 4 common flavors of pies selling for 3 for a dollar.. I will have to do some diner hunting for some good pie!

I find the peach, apple, blueberry, lemon and strawberry at the Hostess outlet stores all the time. And they usually sell at three for a dollar. Still, I'd give my right arm for a chance to once again taste a lemon Frisbee pie.

Love the Twinkies and thew Donettes, but the Hostess pies, with their sugar glaze, are just too sweet, and I never really liked them.

I grew up in Texas, and therefore the Mrs. Bairds fried pie is the only one I consider to be worth eating.

Some people drink. Some do drugs. I do Hostess cherry pies and coffee at 7-11. Each is a road to hell. A little while back, I actually did find a cherry in the cherry pie.

I live in Baltimore, Maryland. Any clue where I can find the hostess peach pies? My dad got me hooked on them when I was a teenager and now that he has passed away, I'd like to have them and remember sharing with him... Yes, I am a daddy's girl!!

I lived on those Hostess Pies in the 70's. Every morning before school I would stop in the Small grocery store on the corner, Hostess Pie and Chocolate Milk Please. EVERYDAY the same thing. I liked the Chocolate Filled Hostess Pies the best. Pineapple was my second favorite. I get them every once in a while out here in California. It seems like their smaller and a lot more crust than filling nowadays.

I searched around to find a thread about the Hostess fruit pies, because I was wondering whatever happened to the Blackberry. I havent found one in about 5 years where I live. I can find the Lemon, Apple, Cherry, Blueberry, Peach, and even Strawberry now (seasonal), but no Blackberry. I've never seen a Pineapple hostess pie in my area (WV), but I have had a French Apple from hostess before. Its just the regular apple pie with raisens in it. Came in a blue and red package. Havent seen the pudding pies for years either. Oh well, always on the hunt.

Something about Hostess pies turns me off. Maybe it's the words "beef fat" in the ingredients. I know animal fat traditionally was used in pies, but in this day and age, it seems like a very unhealthy and unnecessary relic. Actually, my wife tells me Oreo cookies used to contain animal fat, too. But now they don't. So if Nabisco can take it out, why can't Hostess? If I want a pie, I'll take a real, homemade one over the packaged variety any time.
