Hot Chili Dog w/ Fairmont WV

I had some great chili dogs in Fairmont West Virginia yesterday. Off of Exit 137 on US Rt. 79. Take 301 into town and over the Jefferson St. Bridge. 10 feet after the bridge is a little hot dog shack with 8 stools that serves the spiciest chili dogs I've eats. The building has no signs other than the words HotDogs on the window. You get a dog which comes with onion, mustard, and chili. No catsup served on the property. The dog and bun are average and good but the chili is something else. I love and eat a lot of hot food but this made me sweat and left a nice little buzz. Really good flavor as well. For drinks you get milk (light or dark) and a few choice of sodas. Go for the choco milk. Hot dogs are 80 cents. Unbelievable dog at prices I can afford. Check it out. (I wish I had my camera with me but I wasn't expecting to run into this place).

Unfortunately, I spend more time these days in the Huntington area of WV than other parts of the state, but I probably will get to Fairmont at some time. I hope to find the hot dog joints you write of. My kind of place for sure.

quote: Love that last link, to a pepperoni roll homepage. I fell in love with them a couple of years ago while driving on route 50 through the northwestern part of West Virginia. I especially liked the larger ones served fresh from the oven at Colasessano's with marinara sauce and cheese, although I also enjoyed the smaller ones that came in a bag that I got from a convenience store just west of Clarksburg. To me, they are what Roadfood is all about: a delicious regional specialty (as far as I know, they're not available outside of West Virginia) available at inexpensive, locally owned establishments.

To me, they are what Roadfood is all about: a delicious regional specialty (as far as I know, they're not available outside of West Virginia) available at inexpensive, locally owned establishments. These really do seem to be indigenous to West Virginia and a smattering of SW Pennsylvania(they stole it I tell ya!) Almost every mom and pop pizza place in the area as well as every hot dog emporium also features their own version of pepperoni rolls.........from the simple to the very elaborate. These babies are soooooooooooooooooooooooo simple to make at home, that one can at least get a hint of what we're talking about here. Purchase a bag of frozen roll dough such as Rhodes. Let rolls rise according to directions on the package. Take each roll and flatten down to a 6 inch circle. Take your favorite pepperoni, either sandwich style, slices, ground or chunks and layer in an oval in the center of the dough. Fold and seal dough around the pepperoni and put rolls on a flat baking sheet and let rise again until about doubled. Bake at 375 for 15 to 20 minutes or until a golden brown on top.Remove from over, butter the tops and EAT! That is the basic, prevalent pepperoni roll. Most here now spiff it up some by adding favorite cheeses, banana peppers, roasted peppers or marinara. My favorite is with ground pepperoni, italian cheese blends, and Oliverio's Medium Hot Roasted Peppers in Italian Sauce.

The problem with making your own pepperoni rolls and even many of the premanufactured ones in WV is the poor quality of the pepperoni available. Once you've had a good stick of fresh spicey pepperoni, Hormel just doesn't cut it anymore.

I stick with Molinari, Boars Head, Patrick Cudahy and locally produced goodies.

South Hillbilly......have him go out to Sammie's off of Patteson Drive and see what they have. I've not been in, in awhile, but they, at one time, had some of the best imported meats in the tri state area. Occasionally, the Shop n Save in Westover, The Super Kmart in Westover and Bi L0 on University Avenue will have some pretty good imports. The local stuff that I get is generally home produced by several different pals of mine. A great resource for making and curing your own is Yoder's Market in Grantsville, Maryland, an hour east from Morgantown on 1-68.

I have become addicted to those darn pepperoni rolls! I've had them 2 days in a row now. I didn't realize they were just a WV thing until reading some of the posts. if that's the case the world needs to know about them, and the ones I've had have just been the convenience store variety, but they sell tons of them. I've made something similar to them just using flour tortillas and folding them like a burrito and baking in the oven, but these are wonderful. Think I'll take red's recipe and try these at home as well.

And they're not even available in all parts of West Virginia. My parents live just outside of Martinsburg in the eastern panhandle of the state and I have not seen the rolls there.

No offense but most folks in WV don't consider martinville part of the state. Kinda like Wheeling.

Slow down there palmer, just a litte jibe. You are going to give West Virginian hospitality a bad name. Actually I didn't ask every single person but I remember I few things about living in WV. Tutor's biscuit world, ramps, slaw dogs, p rolls, squirrel gravy n' biscuits, and... the panhandles, by many, weren't considered part of the real WV.

Only politically are the eastern and northern panhandles part of the state. . . .Martinsburg is a suburb of Wash. DC. . . Wheeling and Weiton are so much like Pittsburgh it makes you wanna stear clear. WV's a southern state. Let's give PA and VA everything north of Marion County. . . throw in Clarksburg but we keep Parkersburg. They probably don't have pepperoni rolls in them parts, but you can bet that in deepest and most rulral souther WV the pepperoni roll is a common snack.

Well, I live about 10 minutes away from Wheeling, WV and I consider it a part of the state. It was the capital of the state originally until Charleston grabbed that title in 1870 and then it went back to Wheeling in 1875 until it relinquished it back to Charleston for good in 1885. Wheeling was also mentioned in the Billy Joel song 'The Ballad Of Billy The Kid'. Regardless, I consider it, but to each their own. Now pass me one of those Fairmont dogs that I have yet to try.

I had a neat little serendipitous discovery today, in Paducah, KY of all places. I stopped in a little convenience store on the way out of town on US 60. They sold hot pepperoni rolls. Excellent and they even had sauce as well. I don't know if these were at other places but the one today was a very nice surprise.

BloodBeard, howdy neighbor! I live just off of exit 5 and travel by the mountaineer market every night on the way into work. I'll have to stop by some morning and see about these P rolls. King's pizza makes a pepperoni roll or a sausage roll that might qualify too. They have pepperoni wrapped in pizza dough then baked. MikeS.

I know for sure that we contribute a lot more in state taxes then we get back. A decent home around here starts at 200K and quickly goes up. I'm gonna be wishing for Calif Prop. 13 on property taxes pretty soon. We don't find much in spicy hotdog sauce around here or much in pepperoni rolls either. MikeS. Living in Berkeley county WVa.
