As far as Long Island folks are concerned, anything north of the Bronx is "upstate"

We even thought of the Bronx as upstate...

I always thought of anything north of 96th Street as "upstate".

Despite my high regard for John Fox, a boon companion on a Roadfood tour and a man who knows more about hotdogs than anyone in America, I have to tell you that the Italian Hot Dog as served in North Jersey is an abomination not fit for human consumption: imagine, if you will, a tiny hot dog lost in a huge wedge of Italian bread, smothered in onions, peppers, and about a pound of home fries...

I'll stick with just about any of the variations on the "Chili Dog", especially those offered in north Jersey, the Hudson Valley, and parts of Connecticut.

    Cheers, John

Although the Kosher or Kosher-style dog cooked on a flattop (Katz's, Papaya King, Nathan's, etc...) is probably the best NYC has to offer, I would bet that a hundred times more "dirty water" dogs are sold in NYC than any other kind.

But for what it's worth, I also love the Chicago dog!

Well now you have a 2nd friend from Fresno who has never heard of it. I'll have to try it sometime.

I consider the Italian Hot Dog more of a sandwich than a hot dog. As I've posted many times, I usually enjoy a hot dog with just mustard. Exceptions are when I have a chili dog occasionally, or a dog at Rutt's with their unique relish. I look at the Italian Hot Dog as a meal. Not all places that serve them use small hot dogs. And the trick is to sort of curve the dogs down the side of the bread so that they meet at the bottom of the pocket. This way it's easy to get a bit of everything in one bite. Like Seafarer John, there are many people who don't like Italian Hot Dogs or even fried dogs in general. Others look at it as a well balanced meal. Bread, meat, vegetables, and potatoes in one sandwich.

The Galloping Hill Inn in N. Jersey serves up a super hot dog that is best just with a bit of mustard and maybe a bit of sauerkraut - it's what I think of as a "German butcher-shop" hot dog - the kind I grew up with way back when.

While I'm at it I feel compelled to offer my opinion of the "Chicago" hot dog. The few I've had (one was in a joint in the Loop area) contained a good quality hot dog. But the problem was trying to eat all that damn salad along with a hot dog all more or less contained in or on a bun.
If I want salad I'll order it on the side, thank you.

                  Cheers, John

Thank you Miami Don...having seen the photos, I'm pretty sure I'll stick with a Chicago dog, or just my favorite Liehs and Steigerwalds with brown mustard and relish...All that goopy stuff doesn't look very appealing to me...I like to actually taste the dog.

But exsquidao, much as we adore Connecticut dogs, it's hard to say there is a distinct Connecticut hot dog style. Do you disagree?

I enjoy the salad part of the Chicago dog. I think the contrasting texture and temperatures of the warm hot dog, the cool and crisp vegetables and the soft bun work well together.

I like a Chicago Hot Dog, of course for the great taste, the colorful presentation, and the sheer chutzpah of putting all that together and tacitly saying, “This is our hot dog…this is the way we do it, this is the way we like it in Chicago."

But also a great enjoyment when I bite into all those different textures, and feel the rush of different temperatures and juices spurting, is the inevitable recollection of the first few lines of Carl Sandburg’s “Chicago.”

                                    "HOG Butcher for the World,
                                    Tool Maker, Stacker of Wheat,
                                    Player with Railroads and the Nation’s Freight Handler;
                                    Stormy, husky, brawling,
                                    City of the Big Shoulders:

They tell me you are wicked and I believe them, for I have seen your painted women under the gas lamps luring the farm boys."

                                    ...................

When I bite into some Chicken Cordon Bleu, well, that’s another story.

I'm not familar with Maine Red?

Does it have a different taste than a regular hot dog? And I see something yellow that is the condiment. is that corn?

Does it have a different taste than a regular hot dog? And I see something yellow that is the condiment. is that corn?

Yes, that is corn. I had trouble finding a good photo. For some odd reason, the RF review does not actually have a picture of the hot dogs. Here is another one:

Excerpt from an article in Maine Today:

Red hot dogs, called "red snappers," get their red color from a natural food coloring. He couldn't say what the natural coloring was, but it made me feel better about the hue. And why are they called red snappers? Because the casing has a firmness to it that makes the dog snap when you bite it. They're not to be confused with "red hots," a spicy sausage.

So is it customary to serve the Maine red with Corn, and if so is the corn a corn relish or just plain old corn?
