Hot Dog Poll...

The home page's hot dog poll should have a category like: "I don't know what half of these are" I know a Chicago dog, because I lived in Chicago...Maybe we should have a hot dog style thread with photos so we know what a 'NY system' or an 'Italian' dog is..

I was looking for chilidog. But any dog with a good mustard will do the trick.

I can relate to what you're saying. Few foods have more regional variations than the hot dog. It's amazing. Having been reared in the South, I notice my favorite isn't even listed - the chili slaw dog! At least I didn't see it. I have a friend in Fresno who's never heard of such a thing. But for what it's worth, I also love the Chicago dog!

If you knew what a "Michigan" was, you'd HAVE to vote for it!! McSweeneys Route 9 (south of Plattsburgh, the former Nitzi's) is open for the season. Had two great Michigans there last nite. My wife is a big party pooper, she had a BLT. Wally

Wally, you still didn't tell us what a Michigan is. That's not right.

I wish they had the Original Michigan listed also.. Not as a midwest side choice. (And I'm talking chili dogs from the State of Michigan.. Some of the best on the planet!).

I know Papajoe is going to be lookin for the "Texas Style Dog". But how about the Texas Weiner. Split grilled dog, meat sauce, mustard and onions?

I'll take any of the top 3 or the coney at any time. The rest if in the dog mood and no meat sauce nearby.

Great pix, thanks! The Wikipedia definition of a Michigan is fairly accurate. The name Nitzi's is mentioned. My parents both went to high school in Plattsburgh with Jack Rabin. Next to his picture in the Plattsburgh High School yearbook (Class of 1930 I think) along with his name is his nickname "Nitzi". I'm pretty sure that this predates when he opened his hotdog stand on Route 9 south of town. Of course his given name and surname was originally Irving Rabinowitz, hence the nickname. The local newspaper, The Press-Rebublican has a section on their website devoted to Michigan hot dogs. Point your browser to www.pressrepublican.com. Wally Plattsburgh NY

Here's a lousy picture of my favorite. I guess I'd call it an "Artdog". Hebrew National 1/4 pounder that was simmered, split, and griddled with Boar's Head sauerkraut, Gulden's Brown mustard, Braswell Red Pepper relish, a split Polish kosher dill spear, and celery salt all on a buttered & grilled soft hoagie roll. I usually eat just one. pb

Thanks for doing that MiamiDon! I started to do it earlier, but got interrupted. It is amazing just how different hot dogs can be in different parts of the country.

speaking of Route-9, that would be an awesome roadfood trip! From Broadway in NYC to Champlain, NY and oh, so many towns in between with mom and pop shops lining the road. As per the thread, I wanted to note that the white hot style dog is also in Syracuse, and is made by the Hofmann Sausage Company. I like them much better than Zweigles. Also, Michigans are popular in the North Country, not "upstate." The White Hot/Coney/Snappy would be an Upstate, NY thing.

Yeah, I know about the Hoffman's in Syracuse, but the poll category was Rochester, so I dug around for the Rochester version. Ditto on the "Upstate NY". That Route 9 journey would be fun!

My orders for slaw dogs were only topped with slaw, so now I specify chili-slaw dog!

We always thought of our area being part of Upstate NY, but especially since that little jerk Spit#% was gov, we have become the North Country. The North Country is adjacent to but not really part of the Adirondacks. I've said for years that we should split off the North Country from the rest of NYS and become one of the following: A separate state; merge with New Hampshire; or merge with Wyoming, LOL! Enough from me before the moderators ban me. Wally

I speculate that it is so unlike anything that out-of-state hot dog eaters have had that those polled have selected something else. I have never had one, but if I were at a festival at which there were hot dog vendors lined up with all of the hot dogs in the poll, I would head for the NJ Italian booth because it is so unique, but that's just me.

I will love NYC Kosher 4 ever but my favorite on the poll is NJ Italian Hot Dog. I think if more NYers tasted a NJ italian hot dog, they would be "impressed." The problem is you have to go to NJ to find that and at $4.10 a gallon of gas, I'll settle for NYC Kosher.

That "kosher style" dog with kraut from Katz's sure looks good to me. That's, my favorite dog.

No. Although that's the one I voted for, this type of dog is unique to New Jersey and authentic versions are found in only a few counties. Not enough people know about and/or sampled this type of hot dog which is really more of a sandwich. Many people in N.J. have not even heard of an Italian Hot Dog. Grilled German style beef and pork dogs should have been included in the poll. Also, spicy all beef dogs should not be limited to kosher. Popular brands like Sabrett, Nathan's, and Vienna are not kosher but kosher style. There are more styles that could have been included like N.J. Texas Weiners and N.J. deep fried, but there has to be a limit I suppose.

I personally love the concept of an Italain hot dog, but I Need more meat. It seems to me you need a large dog (and NOT 2 dogs) in there and then you have my attention!!! I love All the ingredients except the small dogs. It seems to me the dogs just get lost. (and don't get me wrong if i were gonna get lost i have to say it would be in Fried taters and peppers) but the meat is just lost. Just my opinion. and i guess i am just NOT a good dog person.
