Don't forget Shiek's, 235 East Elm St, Torrington CT - SATURDAY's ONLY for hot dogs..

You can check out Michael's review in the Restaurant section. During the summer, the line is often to or out the door for these yummy dogs! Am I biased? HECK YEAH!! I've been enjoying Shiek's for about 35 years. And yes, i WILL drive 3 1/2 hours to eat there (and do on a REGULAR basis).

Tell Gary or Carey that Charles sent you ;) (extra kraut please!!)

Sad to report that Double D's Dogs in Milford, NH is no longer in business. On a happier note, I found another good hot dog joint. The New England HotDog Company. Located at 1940 Revere Beach Parkway, Everett, MA. Serving up Maple Leaf natural casing dogs with many different condiments. I had a couple of grilled dogs and a rootbeer soda. First time I've had Maple leaf dogs. I LIKED THEM. Give them a try if you get the chance. www.nehotdogs.com

The family and I were out on Martha's Vineyard this last week while on vacation. There is a little hot dog stand built into the back side of the little shopping mall on the edge of Oaks Bluff Marina. The name of this little gem is "Bubba's" They have a menu of some exotic dogs:
          Reuben Dog- sauerkraut,swiss,russian dressing
          Beantown Dog- baked beans,ketchup,brn mustard,cheddar
Slaw Dog- coleslaw, bbq sauce and pickles.
DATELESS DOG- Chopped onion, scallion, garlic salt and mustard.
Chiwawa Dog - chili, hot sauce, Jalepeno, and spicy mustard.
          All are priced at $3.00
So when you're in Oaks Bluff, Martha's Vinyard give this little place a try. Tom

Top Dog in Rockport Mass has some really good dogs. I had a conversation with the owner last time I went and he made me a deep fried hot dog, aka the splitter. I don't think it is on the menu, but ask for it if ou want to try it. A regular hot dog is cooked in oil, no coating, but the dog is juicy and greezy, loved it. They also make a good chili dog. They are open from spring to fall, and sometimes in the winter. http://www.topdogrockport.com/

Went and tried the Hot Dog Truck in Southborough on Rte 30 the other day. It was early around 11:15 and he had a steady business. Wasn't sure that it was open when we arrived. The place is a little more run down than any photo I have seen of it. The special is two N/C dogs, steamed, in grilled New England style buns, a bag of chips and a soda for $4.00 not bad!!!. I had mine with mustand, relish, onion and some celery salt. There are a couple of picnic tables on the edge of the parking lot. If you're in the area it is worth a stop. Tom.

Kind of off-topic, but Top Dog is (was?) owned by Scott Lucas, a DJ on WXRV. He seems to have disappeared from that slot. Anyone know if he's got another radio gig, if the dog business was so successful he decided to live without a regular job, or what? It would be nice to hear someone made enough of a success with dogs to, at least, go freelance.

Hey grynch, You'll be glad to know that Casey's is still doing a booming business, I was there last month. I don't know about Pop's in Mendon, if I get a chance I'll check it out. Tom

If its the place I'm thinking of, Pop's in Webster is closed. Its now a New York style deli in the place of Pop's. I went to Pop's a couple times and it wasn't bad.

There is a new hot dog place in Dudley which I haven't tried yet. Can't remember the name of the place. I'll have to look at sign on my way home tonight...its across from the Park N' Shop

Pops was a little shack on a side road, not far from the Mendon Drive in as I remember and he made fresh popcorn and sold grilled (??) hotdogs.. and you had to have, he made you have, his piccalilly (sp?) relish that he made from tomatoes out of his own garden.
                                .
a real character, and a nice gent.

The place in Northboro you are thinking of might be Beezer's. It's an old Dairy Queen turned into a summer drive-in style ice cream shop on Rt 20. I know they serve a Chicago dog. They serve Vienna Beef on a poppy seeded roll. Full line of Chicago salad toppings included.

do they still have the poppy seed roll? i went a while ago, when victory sold out to hanaford's and they couldn't get the poppy seed rolls....i love the relish...the owner said it's imported from chicago...like the stuff i use to get in sea bright nj at the beach!

there's a hot dog truck in clinton...granny on the go...usually down by depot sq. and on high st fri and sat pm after say 11pm by the bars...not bad and not bad prices. also, you get a ticket and w/ every 5, i think, the 6th is free.

I've been on vacation for the past two weeks, spent some time in Maine, NH and Mass. and tried a few dogs in each lovcation.

First NH, I went to Gilley's an old diner car in downtown Protsmouth. First time for me at Gilley's. Good chili dogs, they serve a griddled skinless dog, beef and pork, but the kid behind the counter didn't know the brand. This place is a real trip back in time. Looks like it hasn't changed in fifty years.

Next stop was Weinerhaus on the circle in Kittery ME, I've been here a couple of times, never been disappointed. Good N/C dog, grilled w/ toasted roll. I had one w/ chili, a good chili but a little bland for my liking but the dog w/ mustard, onion, relish was great.

Made my way up the Maine coast to Flo's, the original Rt.1 location. I've been here many times. Had the Flo dogs, onion relish, mayo (yeah it's a weird thing) and celery salt on a steamed Shield's N/C dog in a steamed bun. I know mayo will put you off, but it really is pretty good when combined with the hot relish. Talk about throwbacks, this place is archaic. The methods they use for cooking and taking orders create a line out the door. Slow service, but worth the wait.

Next stop Rapid Ray's, Main St. Saco ME, first time here. Great location, they serve fried seafood, burgers and dogs. I had a couple of chili dogs. Good spicy chili, griddled skinless dog, not sure of the brand. I asked and the guy behind the counter said they get them special made. I'm not buying it. Still it's a unique spot, no tables just stand-up counters around the outside with large windows that were all open on the beautiful day I was there.

Last two stops were in MA, Hometowne Hotdogs in Framingham and George's Coney Island Worcester.

Hometowne serves a N/C Old Neigborhood dog, steamed on a steamed roll. I got two dogs, one had chili and cheese the other spicy relish and onion. Both of these dogs were cold. They didn't get into the steamer long enough, or the steamer wasn't steaming. I told the guy behind the counter, but he said they were fully cooked. Not a good experience. Not my first time here, but maybe my last....

Coney Island was my most recent stop. (I grew up in Worcester and we never use the George's part of the name) Four up, mustard, onion, chili. These are griddled Kayem skinnies, skinless 12/1 beef and pork dogs, served on steamed buns with the most addictive chili sauce I've ever had. These are the dogs I grew up on, so I'm partial to the chili here. But they never disappoint. And how can you not love the forty foot neon dog dripping mustard.

Next stop for me is Trolley Dog in Framingham. I've heard good things, I'll try to get there this week or next..........BigDog.

bigdog540, I agree with you about Hometowne Hot Dogs in Framingham. About 3 years ago a friend of mine introduced me to the place, it was fantastic. About a year ago new owners took over and it was a downhill slide since then. My last time there was about six months ago and that will be the last time. Now, the TROLLEY DOG is another story, really good hotdogs, and the guy who runs it is a very friendly type. I've been there and the HOT DOG TRUCK in Southborough on Rt 30 a number of time with good experiences. Hope that helps. Tom

I'd post a gushing review, but that would be cheating...photos are up at ossipeeaviation.com...

I just wanted to let everyone know that I just got back from Capitol Lunch in New Britain, CT. This place was recently reviewed by Roadfood editors.

I had a hot dog with their special sauce/mustard/onions and onion rings.

I am NOT going to knock the place but I wanted to say the special sauce was "different". It gave the hot dog a different "texture". The establishment definately seemed to have a lot of people coming and going. I found my onion rings to be quite yummy though I had to wait 3-4 minutes until they were done.

Its not a place that I would travel long distances to visit, however.

Sorry this is still one of my favorite places- I love that meat sauce!

As for Sheik's- I too have been eating hot dogs there for about 30 yrs. My mom went ATLEAST one Sat a month when I was a kid. Their chili is excellent for dogs (and very mild) and the kraut has that wonderful corned beef bits in it- YUM!

For those who like spicy try the Texas Tommy- hot pepper relish, bacon and cheese.

I usually skip the bacon and cheese and just get the hot pepper relish with the chili.

Anyone go to Al's in Naugatuck that was reviewed on here? Those hot dogs were truly awful- the chili tasted like canned tomatoes with meat in it and the quality of the dogs were so cheap and grisly I couldn't finish the dog. And expensive too- $3 for a plain foot long? Ew. Stay away from there!

I just wanted to tell everyone that two, that's right TWO of my favorite places to stop for hotdogs are either closed or closing. I thought that I was headed to Southborough for business the other day and wanted to check and see if the Hot Dog Truck was open on Wednesday. In his website the owner tells how he is going to be closing and moving by December! He lost his spot to a carwash that the owner wants to build. Then, I headed to Framingham to stop at the Hot Dog Trolley, pulled into the parking lot and it was gone. There wasn't even an indication that it had ever been there. I asked the guys at the muffler shop where he was set up and they said that he went out of business overnight, he was there the day before. Anyone know of any places around Framingham or Southborough for the future? Take care, Tom
