Hot Dog carts and Deviled Eggs

Earlier I posted about my surprise at how many people were doing carts, I read today that Deviled eggs are making a comeback, personally I didn't know they left. My point is if I had a hot dog cart, I'd also have some kind of cooler holding a bunch of my killer Deviled Eggs, one could easily charge a buck for 2 halves, I would think, 12 bucks a dozen, nice markup. heck I'd go for pre peeled hard boiled, 2 thanks, need to have the salt and pepper packs.

I too make killer Devils but cannot imagine selling them at the cart. Hell, just getting them to my spot(s) without messing them up would be a nightmare. How about those nifty red picked eggs, mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm. Sams club has themright next to the picked pigs feet, wooo!

The smell of them may scare people off before they even realize you are selling deviled eggs.

I applaud the brain storming..... but I dont think you could give them away on a cart :( Now having a griddle and making fried eggs sandwiches thats a different story :) Not every food is a "cart" food. I think biker jim posted several times about trying to sell slices of cheese cake from his cart. I am sure it is excellent but folks wouldnt buy it. Ronnie Tex Grill

I love deviled eggs, but on first glance I would probably not get them off a cart. Perhaps not fair and makes me miss out but it just doesn't seem right to me. Raw eggs however...

I am sorry, but I would never buy deviled eggs from a hot dog cart.

If you do a search for boiled eggs you will see a thread called "hello to all the hot dog pros" Thats where they had some talk about selling boiled eggs. On guy sells lots of em and said to have hot sauce to go w/ em. Sounds good to me as a desert w/ my dog. Joe

On first blush, it seems odd. However, consider that aside from hot dogs, the nationally renowned Hot Dog Johnny's in Buttzville, N.J., is known for, of all things, buttermilk (and also their birch beer). Do it long enough, stay in business, and you get known for it. The Bear

6star, thanks for the link. Someday I will take you up on your kind offer to teach me how to do that. Dr.B, your one of the guys who sells boiled eggs, and good point, you would have to make the devels on site unless you had an inspected kitchen at home. Joe

I think pickled eggs in a jar would do better. I like the hot sauce idea

Jack Not that I would want to run an end around the Health dept., how in the world would they ever know where they came from, unless you told them.

I KNOW the pickled eggs do well and also big dill pickles. I just don't think the deviled eggs will work. Sorry.

As much as I love deviled eggs, not from a cart. Storage issues are first thing that come to my mind. But Pickled Eggs, Sausage and Pickles would catch my attention! (Plus storage and temps on these don't become an issue).

I love deviled eggs but their not something I would buy off a hot dog cart.

I sold these off my truck in SW Florida and they sold like crazy. I would make them and cover cut egg from end to end with mixture. Then put halves together. wrap in waxpapper, place eggs in ziptype bag and then on Ice. I charged $1.00 for a whole egg. I didn't have to worry because they went fast. IMO I would try a dozen and see what happens. Just post a sign to let customers know you have them. It's all a matter of personal preference. Heck I would run a special on a certain day for P+P (pepsi and peanuts) Sold like crazy all day long. Most purchased and added peanuts to the pepsi with a dash of hot sauce.....go figure??

blohatchii, if you had a truck, why would you put them on ice? No fridge in the rig?? Problem I have with deviled eggs on ice is they get 'runny'. Or as the kid would put it, Icky... Too much moisture and temp. variables going on there (and I know your not burying them under the ice squashing them.. Or are you?? .. But then again, I live in sweltering Michigan here, so things may be different down south.

No, it didn't have a refrigerator. It was a canteen type truck that I drove from job site to job site. Cab in front silver box in back. With oven and icebin, shelves, pull taps for fountain drinks, I carried hot and cold item snacks and drinks. Other side of truck was for canisters of CO2 and syrup and storage. I didn't have a problem with the eggs getting soggy because like I said they sold great and fast. I didn't bury them I placed the zipbag on ice.

What about selling some potato salad from the cart. I am sure you would actually have to make it on the cart. Anyone done that?
