Hot Dog selling prices

My sons sell a 6:1 skinless for $3.00. For $5.00 you get a dog, a bag of chips, and a can of ice cold soda. I noticed yesterday that they were out of the 6:1 and were using 8:1. One or two customers wanted to know how big the dog was before they ordered. They seemed satisfied with the size and the dressing ($3.00 covers everything from plain to chili). I'm wondering if others price similarly and if how important the difference between a 6 and an 8 might be.

I sell a 7/1 natural casing dog for $2. I'd like to get more, but my local market won't support it (I already get more than a few walk-away because they think $2 is too much for a hot dog. Recently, the dogs have been coming in about the size of 8/1 dogs, even though I am still ordering the 7's, and the label hasn't changed. I'm not complaining because I make more money this way. So far no one has said anything. If I start having people ask questions, though, I'll have to call my supplier and ask what's what.

We are farther south of you and have sold in Albuquerque. We have 8/1s that we sell for $2.50 that includes ALL toppings (and we have a lot of toppings). Hot dogs is not our main menu item. We also sell deli sandwiches, BBQ and sausages. We sell our chips and our drinks for $1 each.

8/1's here for $2 and $2.50 for Chilidog. The lady down the road has them for $2.50 and $2.75 with chili. It all depends on your market, cost of materials, and competition. I know another guy in my area that has a 4/1 for $3.

Sorry for the novice question, what is a 8/1, 6/1 hot dog mean?

8/1 = 8 hot dogs per pound
6/1 = 6 hot dogs per pound
4/1 = 4 hot dogs per pound

It is a size of measure... the smaller the number, the bigger the hot dog.

I'm sorry, but that sounds kinda like a bait and switch to me. In this business all we have to keep the customers coming is the quality of our food and our reputations. I know even the most die hard dog fan would be hard pressed to tell the difference between a 6/1 and an 8/1 without a scale, to me it's a matter of honor and pride in giving my customers the same quality product that hooked them into coming to me in the first place.
