Hot Dogs - Waterbury/Danbury CT Thu, 03/23/06 10:35 AM (permalink)
Hi guys,
I'm going to be in the Waterbury CT area this weekend. In August, I was in Danbury and tried the Roadside Chilihouse, which I thought was pretty decent. This time I will be between Waterbury and Danbury and was wondering of the following which you might reccommend - Frankies, Blackies or JK. Any other suggestions?

My wife is 8 months pregnant (She was actually already pregnant when we went on the NJ Hot Dog tour! We just didn't know! I got a little nervous since hotdogs are a bit of a no no for pregnant women, but she was fine) Maybe all those dogs will help bring another roadfooder into the world! Doubt we'll be on the next tour though) Needless to say, "I'm running out of time" and probably will have to pick just one place.

They're all good choices (and all different.) JK's is my personal fave, food-wise (YMMV.) Blackies is the most unique/memorable. Frankies is a chain, and though the food is fine, most branches don't really offer a roadfood experience. I haven't been to the 700 Watertown Ave branch but that looks the most promising, ambience-wise.

Also consider the Botsford Drive-in on Rte. 25 in Newtown. I give this one high atmosphere points, too.

Three more options if you're willing to go 10-15 min south of 84: The incredible Super Duper Weenie has (had?) a branch in Monroe on the corner of Rtes 25 and 136 (I was there a couple of months ago but there's nothing about it on the SDW website so you might want to call ahead.) There's also Al's in Naugatuck and Carolyn's (Saturday only) in Seymour; both off of Rte. 8 and written up on Roadfood.com.

To the best of my recollection, Frankies, Blackies and Botsford all deep-fry their dogs. SDW and JK's grill theirs. I'm pretty sure Al's fries and Carolyn's grills but don't hold me to that. They're all tasty.

    Bon appetit!

Super Duper is no longer in Monroe.
The original Fairfield location is the only location left.

IMHO, Super Duper Weenie is horrible!

Much better off trying Swanky Frank's in either Milford or Westport. Their new Newtown location is still some weeks off from opening.

Wow -- first Stratford then Monroe? That was quick. I wonder why they couldn't make it work in more than one store.

Just curious -- what don't you like about them? I'm a fan but obviously taste is a very personal thing.

Just wanted to let you guys know I was able to try both Blackies and JK. Had a dog at each. I did like the relish at blackies (and that made the dog) but found it just ok. JK was fine too. Much better place to take my wife. Tried the grape nut pudding too (which was more like bread pudding) All in all both were nice stops. We may end up in CT one last time before the baby is due. So I'll keep the other places in mind.

I have to be honest, neither place bowled me over the way some of the stops on the NJ tour.
