Hot Dogs available at Woodbridge Wegman's

The Woodbridge Wegman's is the closest to me. Until now they carried hard to get out of state brands like Zweigle's and Hofmann's. I had to go to Bridgewater to get Sahlen's and Hartmann's. As of this week, the Woodbridge location started stocking Sahlen's and Hartmann's. Sahlen's are only sold in the 3 lb package and are on sale for $9.99. Hartmann's franks (beef and pork, fat, about 5 to a lb) are sold behind the deli counter. The 6 to a lb longer thinner wieners are available at Bridgewater. Also at Wegmans are Hartmann's beef wieners, which I haven't had yet. The deli manager told me that he will be stocking them this summer, but only had one box and that I better get in quick before they ran out. Luckily I was able to get the last 2. I will be sampling them later along with Sahlen's, Hartmann's beef/pork frank, and Sahlen's. Happy Memorial Day Weekend to all.

Hi John, I'll look for those Hartmann's all beef weiners next time I'm in Wegman's in the Freehold area, by sis's house... I thought of you yesterday, as I grilled up my Sabrett natural casing hot dog at 9 am. before work. Nothing like a good hot dog (with grilled onions) to get me going for the day! I hope you enjoy your holiday weekend, John! Let me guess, are you grilling up some hot dogs outside today?!? (I had to settle for my frying pan , due to condo laws)

At Wegman's Wilkes-Barre I picked up some Hebrew National quarter pounders. Jeez, they're the size of small cucumbers. As best I remember, They've carried all the brands mentioned above, again for as long as I remember. It hasn't been continuously, sometimes they have them and sometimes they don't. And they aren't with the other hot dogs; they're always over in the deli section.

JUST got back from a trip over to Scranton, and a stop at the Wegman's over there...my freezer is now overloaded with dogs for the summer! Here is what I currently have: About a 1/2 lb of Groat & Weigle's natural casing franks - those are available at the deli at the local Price Chopper. two and half lbs of Zweigle's White Hots about a lb of Hoffman's natural casing franks a lb of Hoffman Snappys - just picked up today two lbs of Zweigles Texas Hots - also just picked up today plus, as backup, couple of packages of HN..... plus three or four kielbasa of various kinds plus a fresh container of sauce from Coney Island in Middletown.... plus a couple of packages of Freihofer NE style buns..... plus I just replaced the grilling surface AND lava rocks on the old grill almost suppertime!!!

John Fox: Thanks for the tip. I saw your post this morning and since we were going food shopping today for a cookout tomorrow anyway, why not head to Woodbridge? I'm now stocked with a 3lb bag of Sahlen's. It looks like as of 4PM today there were only a few bags left. Last year we bought both the Sahlen's and the Hartmann's at the Bridgewater Wegman's. Myself, family and guests all preferred the Sahlen's over the Hartmann's. I know most people on this board are big fans of the Hartmann's, but we didn't agree. PS: We also stopped in at the new Canal's Liquors just across from Woodbridge Mall. I think that's the first of thier stores to open that far North in NJ. Excellent selecton of beer and wine, and good prices on the Micro's. Thanks again. Let the Summer begin!

If I remember correctly, the regular Hartmann's are kind of bland, aren't they? I'm trying to think of the hot dogs I got at weg's a few years ago. They were long and thin, and hot peppery as hell. They came $7.99/lb in the deli case, and they were from upstate NY. I loved them, the rest of the family couldn't eat them (too hot).

I do not believe that it could be Hofmanns. Hofmanns dogs are mild but delicious.

It sounds like you guys are confusing Hoffman's with Hartmann's. Two different brands, both carried at Wegman's.

Mosca, I don't know of any of the hot dogs offerred at Wegman's that can be considered hot and peppery. Unless you are referring to Hofmann's coney/snappy grillers. They are peppery, but only hot compared to a regular hot dog. Hofmann's are fairly mild, but good. Hartmann's have a little more smoke flavor. Yesterday and today I ate hot dogs. Sahlen's, Thumann's (beef/pork griller), Hartmann's beef wiener, Hartman's pork/beef 1/4 lb frank, and Best's skinless 8 to a lb beef dog. Best's natural casing is much better on the grill after being heated in water and grilled. The skinless was ok. Hartmann's beef wiener was spicier than their regular wiener and had a very tangy flavor. Sort of vinegary/mustardy. Definitely not like a typical eastern U.S. kosher style dog. It was ok, but not near as good as their regular beef and pork wiener. The Hartmann's beef and pork frank was 1/4 lb. Short and very thick. Too thick for my taste. But the dog was very good, tasting like their beef/pork wiener. Sahlen's was very good. Haven't had one in about a year. Good full flavor with a nice slight peppery taste. I enjoyed it even more than the Hartmann's frank. Thumann's was definitely the best of the bunch. Just a great meaty flavor. Like an exceptional ham. Admittedly my tastes are fickle, but the last couple of times I compared these dogs I preferred Thumann's.

Mr. Fox, Not to hijack the thread or ask a question that has already been covered, but I didn't see this anywhere on the forum (maybe from my search skills). I was curious if you had any comments on the differences between Sahlen's and Wardynski's. Living in Buffalo, I tend to buy whichever one is on sale. Both are the natural casing ones. Yesterday we had the Sahlen's at a picnic, and this evening we had some Wardynski's. Both are good, but the Wardynski's seemed to have a spicier taste, although not hot and peppery either. I was just curious what you had found by comparison. Glad to hear that Wegmans is able to supply some good eats as they expand their number of locations.

I've had Wardynski's a couple of years ago. Becky Mercuri, author of the Great American Hot Dog Book sent me some as well as some Sahlen's. I posted about the differences somewhere on Roadfood, but I can't find the posts. I even did a search on Wardynski's. From what I remember, the two were somewhat similar but I did prefer Sahlen's.

Somewhere I have a Top's ad that I need to look through. That's one of those decisions where you can't go wrong either way. I really can't decide which one I like better, and maybe that's for the best.
