Hot Dogs cooked in peppers

It's been awhile since I've been here but I found a delicious hotdog dish at a friends Memorial Day cookout. I tried doing a search and didn't seem to find anything so here it goes. What you'll need one package of hotdogs one medium or large onion halved and sliced 2 jars of sliced bananna peppers All ingredients go into a pot with an additional 2 jars of water, bring to a boil then reduce to simmer, cook until done then drain and serve on toasted buns or cut the dogs in thirds and serve as a side dish. The hotdogs pick up the flavor of the peppers and somehow are juicier than when cooked in plain water and the pepper and onion "relish" is fabulous

Banana peppers from a jar? I've never seen those. I see banana peppers in the produce sections all the time, but never jarred ones. That aside, the hotdog thing sounds interesting.

I didn't know that. As I said, I've never seen them in a jar. I've only seen them with the other peppers in the produce section.

You probably want them jarred for the vinegar. I've seen banana peppers jarred sliced. I like hot dogs boiled in peas and carrots, but I just may give this a try one day.

My Dad's been making these for years, cuts them in bite size pieces, you don't want them to touch your lips, but they aren't miserably hot. He uses two types of jarred hot peppers, usually cherry and banana, then one type of fresh, usually finger hots. He puts those and one quartered onion in a crock pot along with 2 T crushed red pepper and a cup of vinegar, 1 T salt. Cover with water and simmer for 11 hours on low(makes the night before), the next day he puts the bite sized hot dogs in and cooks for 1 hour. That's it. If he's transporting say to a party he doesn't put the dogs in until he gets there, best to stab them with a tooth pick, don't use your fingers......he uses the leftover cooking liquid, peppers and all to kill weeds. I've made these many times, saving my peppers jars and storing these in my fridge, again, peppers and all, last for quite awhile.

Hey Michael, I was kind of surprised when I got flagged and moved!!! I guess I should have said "sliced" but since Ive only seen bananna peppers in jars sliced I thought it was self explanatory = ) Papa, we call'm hotdawgs here in florida as well, but ah try not ta type in dialect in forums Rusty, I'd probably add jalapenos or something spicier than the bananna peppers but the dogs were tasty as is and my friends family considers them hot (shrug) My pickled habenaro and onions was barely touched.. I hadn't thought of jarring the leftovers!! that sounds like a great idea for a l8 nite snack!

Jarred banana peppers can be bought unsliced in sizes ranging from 12 oz. up to a gallon. They have been split and cleaned of their seeds. They are full length and work really well for frying. Of course, some of you Yankees have probably never experienced fried banana peppers unless you've traveled south. Most restaurants that serve them usually use mild peepers because the hot peppers transfer their heat to the cooking oil pretty quickly.

The peppers are also available pickled whole, check out the website for Mazzetta Co in California. I always have a jar of their sweet banana wax peppers in the fridge. They are whole and unseeded, one to three inches long. I don't discard the seeds, the whole product is very mild. They're great to slice or chop to add to scrambled eggs, sandwiches, home made pizza, anything. I'm going to try stuffing and baking them if I can figure out what to stuff them with. I made some weiners similiar to dreamzpainter's, sort of by accident. I did simmer the weiners in peppers and their juice with some onion added. But it looked and smelled kind of interesting as it progressed, so I let the liquid cook away until it was gone, then added a little butter so the weiner skin and vegetables would brown and crisp up a little. It was a different and good flavor that I will do again.

I've never heard of such a recipe and look forward to trying it. I think The 99¢ Store here in California carries the sliced variety. I know the Mazzetta Co but I'm thinking they must ship their banana peppers to the East Coast.

Ok then. Back to Hot dogs right? I would really like to see pictures of this dish. Has anyone photographed it yet? If not, I look forward to it.
