Hot dog buns

I recently ate at two hot dog establishments...The Hot Dog Shoppe in Warren Ohio and Hot Dog Heaven in Amherst Ohio that have been given excellent ratings. Both places were good and lived up to their reputations. There is one thing that I am finding that hot dog joints have in common. They put a perfectly nice hot dog on a cold bun.
 
I always liked the way Woolworths used to cook their dogs on a spit and then they would toast the bun. I wish more hot dog joints would toast the bun. I think it would make the dining experience perfect.
 
What do you think? Do you prefer your bun toasted or dry and cold?

    Those Woolworth hot dogs on a buttered toasted bun are a favorite childhood memory.
     
    I agree -- split, buttered and grilled or toasted is the best.  Steamed is a distant second.  Cold out of the package -- yuck.

    Toasted bun, hands down.  I prefer cold otherwise to steamed.

    I agree if your ever in NC (Winston Salem) try Skippys on 4th street he not only grills the all beef hot dog he butters and grills the bun, which is made from his own  award winning pretzel dough recipe

    Toasted. 
       Hiram's in Ft. Lee, N.J., among my favorite hot dog stops, toasts the bun quite nicely. Off hand I know of no place that butters before toasting the bun.

      Except, of  course, at Chez ScreenBear. There, if one asks, they gladly butter and toast the bun...if they're not too busy and in the mood.

       Of late, the bun of choice there is a Calandra (Newark, N.J.) "Long Roll,"  which they lightly butter and warm in a 350 degree oven for ten minutes, wrapped, halfway only, in aluminum foil. But then, they really care about hot dog preparation. Gosh, it's almost like a religion there.

    I'm with you on that oine Mr Hoffman!  steamed buns get SOGGY---esp. with mustard and relish added.

    I just don't care for steamed buns. Frankly, I don't even like the idea of steamed buns.

    Sometime I like steamed and sometimes I like toasted.  I really enjoy a dog with mustard and sauerkraut on a nice soggy steamed bun.  I mostly enjoy a dog off the BBQ when the bun has been toasted lightly on the BBQ grill.
    Oh hell, give me a hot dog anyway (except with ketchup) and i love it.

    I don't like a bun that has been steamed to the point of being a dough ball. other than tha I'll take it any way but stale!

    I  proably have had the hot dog roll  prepared every way possible including stale and breaking into pieces. Toasted and steamed seem to be the best. It seems every time I hoist for the first bite  of a dog I am the hungriest I have ever been. It proves I like dogs and in three  quick bites at most its gone no matter how it was prepared.

    I tried yet another hot dog place in Girard Ohio called Jib Jab. Very similar to The Hot Dog Shoppe in Warren and again the bun was fresh but lacking something. I guess I must be hooked on toasted hot dog buns. That's unusual for me as I don't like toasted subs. Woolworths must have made a lasting impression on me.

    A long time ago, I had my choice of either a Woolworth's or WT Grant's dog on the way home from grade school. Grant's always won out. The dog was cooked on one of those roller grills & served on a freshly toasted New England style bun, which was a rarity in the NYC area back then. I still like the bun toasted, even if it's not a NE style.

    While this forum isn't an English class, good punctuation and capital letters at the beginning of sentences help readers understand the poster's message. I've been on forums where someone will post a message a dozen lines long, without caps or punctuation. It makes it very hard to read and understand.   Combine that with someone who has a problem organizing their thoughts and you might as well try to read a bowl of alphabet soup!

      I sympathize. While I wouldn't want to dissuade someone from posting because he or she fails to supply the proper punctuation, I wish there were a painless way to correct him or her. An opportunity to learn is, well, an opportunity.
     
     Over the years I've encountered folks who had a better facility for punctuation and grammar than I. And though their corrections initially hurt, I was ultimately the better for it.
     
      There are certain posters who repeatedly make the same mistakes, but I demur for fear of being hurtful. It is indeed a conundrum.  This isn't a classroom.  It's fun. But gosh...it's hard not to say nuttin'.
