Hot dog carts at lowe's Mon, 08/11/08 10:29 PM (permalink)
Hey everyone. I am new to this site and fairly new to the hot dog cart business. I was wondering if there was anyone out there that has a cart set up at lowes or home depot. I am thinking about doing it and have filled out the aplication. It seems to be a long process! My question mainly is that is it worth it? I know you have to give them a monthly fee and all and I just wanted to see what more experianced doggers have to say. Thanks

Have never known anyone that made it at lowes. The ones around here want enormous rents and have a constant parade of disappointed cart owners packing up after a short while. The home depot has a trailer set up that is usually closed and for sale constantly.

Home inmprovement stores have heavy traffic but most that go there are in hurry.

See if you can get with a softball/baseball/soccer feild, they are true gold mines! Avoid car sales, they want you to give the stuff away.

Home improvement store sales are down, and anyone making a living off their customer base will be down also. Woody's has about 50 carts now mostly outside Lowe's stores and a few other locations and some do well and others don't make it. I think they pay about $500 per month rent at Lowe's. Their cart at Pearl Harbor Visitor Center in Hawaii did almost $32,000 last month. The rest of the top ten came in at between $8800 and $13,600.....and, there are others that have folded their tents and melted away.

It's always a gamble as to what will be a good spot or not. Cart figures at home improvement stores are consistently a percentage of what the store grosses. I can't remember what the average is though, maybe around 1-2% or somewhere near that.

Actually, the president of Woody's is a woman. I know that no one would have been able to sleep without knowing that. That's me you're talkin' about. Stop in for a free dog when you're in the area. Just mention that we gabbbed on Roadfood.
