Processed meat never touched her lips. Her favorite foods were bran muffins and apples. She was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and died within 5 months.

I'm sure that Maurie and Flaurie Berman, both 79 years old, owners of the famous Superdawg in Chicago since 1947 would disagree with those results. Flaurie, on the PBS "A Hot Dog Program" claimed to eat at least one hot dog a day for the past 57 years. According to Louise L. Hay, author of "You Can Heal Your Life," pancreatic cancer represents rejection, anger, and frustration because life seems to have lost its sweetness. A good immune system and a happy life should keep us hot dog eaters alive. It's not what you eat, it's what's eating you that really matters. While fried and processed foods (nitrates) may not be the healthiest choice, moderation is the key. I'll continue selling and eating hot dogs. A good place for my 500th post. I can't remember how many times I have seen similar "warnings" that a specific kind of food would cause cancer or heart failure, while another food would help prevent them. Remember how grilled meats would cause cancer because of the char on the outside? Have we all given up grilling, or enjoying steaks, burgers, or hotdogs? How about red wine and green tea decreasing the chance of coronary artery disease because of the free radicals (antioxidants, not counter-culture rebels LOL). Then you read that a small amount of almost any alcoholic beverage may have the same affect. I agree with CSD, it's what you eat, in moderation, coupled with a healthy attitude.

Moderation is certainly the key. However, this is a large study. But there is NO cure for pancreatic cancer. Do lets be careful, friends.

If we gave up everything a "study" says is bad for us we'd be typing on the tofu/soymilk forum. I'll eat what I enjoy thankyou and if by chance theres a few years at the end I don't make it to well.... I was never big on uncontrolled drooling and having my diaper changed anyway!!

I met a Hot dog eating champion on the Jersey Roadfood hot dog tour last Fall. A really nice guy who appeared to be in good health. In fact, he mentioned the story about danger to the pancreas and took his out to show us. It looked fine to me and he said it was in excellent shape. He did say, though, that he was reluctant to take it out to show off too often because it was so difficult to get it back in and functioning properly again. That first paragrtaph is true, the second paragraph is pure imagination... cheers, John

And why is it that if you look in a health food store or restaurant, the people working there are sickly looking and pale, while if you look in a pizzeria, you see big strapping, healthy looking guys?

Yesterday I cooked dogs for the retail customers of one of my customers. I used Sinai 48 1/4 pounders for them, but kept a private stash of Usinger beef franks and Bavarian wieners for the store employees and myself. I hope I didn't get cancer.
