That's because a hot dog ain't a hot dog until frank/wiener meets bun. Followed by lots of ketchup.

Foodbme This subject has peaked my interest, so today when I was at the Supermarket, I checked the Tube Steak section. EVERY SINGLE BRAND THERE, except Oscar Meyer and a no name generic store package, CALLED THEIR PRODUCT "FRANKS"!!!!!! Nathans, Hebrew Nat'l, Ball Park, all of them are called FRANKS - NOT HOT DOGS!!! The Exception was Oscar Meyer - they're called Weiners. Could be because they spent $$$ Millions on getting people to sing, "Oh, I wish I was an Oscar Meyer Weiner" The Buck a pound Generic was called Hot Dogs. Don't believe me? Check it out! That's because technically the meat is considerd a frankfurter or wiener ( wiener being longer and thinner than a frank), while a hot dog is the meat plus the bun.

NYPIzzaNut Hotdog is now commonly accepted as one word in most dictionaries - do most here prefer to spell it as two words? Dictionary makers add words when they find them used by the public. On their web site, Merriam-Webster does not accept hotdog, giving hot dog as a return. Same with my print editions, which are a few years old now. I would like to ask the original poster, if he did the original research, to give us the list of dictionaries he consulted. Or was it posted on a trivia web site, such as the features section of AOL?

With the ones I saw, the Oscar Meyer Wieners were shorter than the Franks. Butcher Shop/Meat Market products may be different.

Hot dog is not a word, it's a noun phrase. That's why it's not in the dictionary.

JayL Is this seriously a concern for you people? I'm in the bbq business and don't really care if you spell it bbq, bar-b-que, barbecue, bar-b-cue, or crap on a plate. It's a hot dog (errr....hotdog) for crying out loud. Just don't call it a frankfurter. LOL My mother always called them frankfurters. "We're having frankfurters tonight!" Believe me, even as my two older brothers and I laughed, we knew what was for dinner!
