I will be in Houston for the MLB All Star game for a few days. Is best steakhouse Pappas Bros? Best barbecue? Any other suggestions?

hey i heard Vic and Anthony's across from the stadium is a great steakhouse(vicandanthonys.com)...you can't go wrong with Pappas though

Will you have a car, or will you be using our (snicker, snicker) "public transportation"?

I used to travel there quite often. My favorite places were Goode Company BBQ and Capt'n Bennys for catfish.

Goode Company was one of the better BBQ's around. Real Texas style.

Benny's had the best catfish I have ever had. Decent gumbo, too.

Goodes is rated #1 in Houston Zagat for barbecue. Have you ever tried Ottos, place other person just recommended?

I second Vic and Anthony's. Pappas is pretty good too. Both are expensive, but true USDA Prime.

What is the deal with all the new steakhouses in town? Just when I think this town can't possibly support more, we get another one.

Irma's, just north-"ish" from the stadium, is worth the trip. Great mexican food and margaritas. It's my pre-game place of choice.

‘Dozer, I have read a number of reviews on Irma’s and most were not very complimentary. Most claim the food was way too expensive for the amount and quality of food. I had wanted to try it, but no way will I go there now.

Tony, if seafood is an option, I would recommend either of the Massa’s restaurants downtown. They have been there since I was a kid, and that is over 50 years. You don’t stay in business that long unless you are topnotch.

Also good downtown - Treebeards for red beans and rice.

I wish I was in a position to compare upscale steakhouses! I think in general the Pappas restaurants have been going downhill as the brothers have spread themselves very thin with so many projects. Whether that applies to the steak house I don’t know and I’ve heard so much about Pappas Bros. Steakhouse for years, it has been my plan to get there for some time.

Besides the national chains, the local competition includes Vic and Anthony’s and Brenner’s, both owned by Landry’s, Inc. The specter of Tilman Fertitta, CEO of Landry’s, inspires loathing and disgust in many, awe and admiration in others. I have had mixed experiences at Landry’s, Inc. restaurants. I remembered that both of our local reviewers have visited both and as I re-read their reviews I realized they both had concluded Vic and Anthony's is the best steakhouse in town.

I had been to Brenner's once many years ago and had a very memorable meal; I do want to visit again, but I'm definitely wavering on my determination to go to Pappas.

It seems neither of these reviewers has visited Pappas Bros. for some time; at least I don’t find an archived review available on line. The Press did visit Capital Grille recently and discovered they don’t serve prime beef at their Houston location.

We have been going to Steak and Ale lately, and it has become one of our favorite places. I think their steaks are wonderful, but I usually get the grilled chicken pasta.

However, if you read the Steak and Ale reviews from Before-U-Eat, you will find many negative comments. Of course, locations vary with quality and service, and I am sure who the duty chef is makes a difference.

The point is you can’t always rely on reviews.

I will second Jax for burgers, and will add that their CFS ain’t none too shabby.

I would like to make another downtown/midtwon suggestion -

THIS IS IT! "Soulfood" place. It was created and opened by a retired Houston firefighter. The food is great, huge portions and always seems to be just what you want. The sweetea is delicious.
