I'm sorry I spoiled the Waffle House loving fun with my anti-WH comments on this thread.

But, it's not like I didn't back it up with bad experiences and I offered up several sensible alternatives.

I was sneered at when I unthoughtfully denounced the merits of the obviously magnificent and almighty (insert music here) Waffle House.

Apparently, I was unaware of how sacred the Waffle House was from any criticism. So, I would like to submit my sincerest and deepest regard to anyone I may have offended by my points of contention that the Waffle House does not "stack up" to a vast array of quality breakfast diners, restaraunts and other eateries.

I won't change my opinion on the matter, but I won't think any less of you for enjoying the foods and service you are provided at the Waffle House.

ooops, Im sorry again, I didn't mean to turn green...

there I go again...

...I'm sor..

...ugh...ok...I feel better now...

I'm so embarassed I got sick. I was thinking about the food and service at the WH...

I'm sor..

I gotta go.

I wrote a poem about Waffle House today.
The closest WH for Oregon is in Arizona.
I keep hoping they will make it to the northwest soon.

WJ: You old rascal. I am suprised that you are interested in this topic as I am sure that you can can do hashbrowns covered and smothered better than anyone on this site. I sincerely would like to see you do your best against WH in regard to super hashbrowns. Quite frankly, I would think you would lose but who knows

Had a business associate pick me up at the interstate (Volvo died of tranmission problems) and I asked him to pick me up at the WH. His opimion of wh was quite low also. Two meals over the next four days changed him 180 degrees.

you took a business associate to Waffle House?

okay then.

My opinion is not based on an unsubstantiated opinion. I can tell you which Waffle Houses I've been to in NC and VA.
NONE were any good.

Exit 55 off 85. pretty good but not great.

Burlington NC...horrible but got a bunch of freebies when I complaimed to home office.

Greensboro, NC at airport exit...fantastic. Destination eating place.

Enka Candler exit off 40. Another great one.

I could go on and on but WH's are generally very good. Just my experience after driving 35,000 miles a year for thirty years.

N.C.
Thomasville, just off I-85. BAD
Greensboro, on High Point Road. BAD
Winston-Salem, Hanes Mill Road. BAD
Lexington, off of I-85. BAD
Willmington, College Road. BAD

MD
Frederick, off of I-270. BAD

VA
Winchester. off I-81. BAD
Fredericksburg. Off I-95 (probably on US 1 -Jeff. Davis Hwy) BAD.

Everytime someone suckers me into thinking I'll like it, by telling me that "this one particular WH is great," I end up finding another bad WH.

Sorry.
In my experience
Fodd = Mediocre to poor.
Service = mediocre to good service (one of the better points)
Cleanliness = passable to filthy. Even the "new" one I went into had dirty floors first thing in the morning.

It's just not worth the risk. no matter how many miles I've travelled.

in DC area, we have the Silver Diner chain, which is 10 milllion times better. From breakfast, to lunch, dinner and dessert.Top to bottom, cleaner, better food, good service, great atmosphere.

I trust Johnny Rockets over WH.

You can go to every WH in the country and rate each one in 50 different catagories and then offer me a free trip and free meals to the WH that rated the absolute highest.
I may make the trip (cuz I'm not stupid. I'll take a free trip any day) But I won't accept the free meals at WH.

well, I didn't have time to read the 10 pages in their entirety, but I'll add my thoughts just for the heck of it.

I have always gotten a kick out of the WH on each side of the highway so you can make a right turn and get to one which ever way you happen to be travelling.

I like the scattered, smothered, and covered double plate with a grilled chicken breast and salad. Also a couple of grilled cheese sammidges and a big ol bowl of Campbell's vegetable beef soup really can hit the spot.

I think it is all in what you grew up having as to what is good as an adult and what is nasty. I grew up with WH, so it's pretty good to me. Huddle House has a deep frier, so you can get french fries there. We started eating at the first Cracker Barell in TN when it opened on our trips from GA to Grandma's in OH, so I still love them even though there have been changes.

Here's to a great breakfast in the middle of the night!

Hmmm, I see a trend ! I suggest you stay out of Waffle Houses. Those of us that think they are great and love the food will continue to go and enjoy it and you can stay away from them and not suffer so much !

Scorereader,
I admire your drive. Hate a restaurant, have nothing but bad meals and continue to eat at the chain. Only question is WHY?

I've had bad experiences at WH's but they are few and far between. For me they are simple, easy, quick, good and fast. A known quantity...nothing for the Food Network but I just want a couple of eggs, dry whole wheat toast and some crisp hashbrowns in ten minutes.

I probably eat at WH a hundred times per year w/ a bad experience once every two to three years.

V960,
good question.
I will NOT go again, for sure.
Each time from the 1st bad experience to the last, I was dragged there by the group I was with.
Usually on a Saturday and centered around football.
Pre-game meal, post game meal, you get the idea.

I did have one decent experience at a WH. But I don't include that because I had been out drinking -and suspected that the good experience was due to being inebriated. It was the 1st time I went to the WH in Thomasville after imbibing at Connelly's. The 2nd time I went was for B'fast on a Sunday on my way to Charlotte for a football game and it solidified my suspicions than the 1st experience was due to my lack of good perception.

I'm surprised a roadfood.com-er goes to a chain restaraunt that often and is interested in this site.

100 times per year is nearly 2x per week!
I eat out a lot, but rarely the same place that many times per year...unless you count the coffee shop cafe in our building.
there are LOTS of great small diners near I-85 or I-40 or I-77. Might I suggest you give some of them a try.

Mostly in the Piedmont Triad area, here's a list the next time you're in that area:

Smith Street Diner (Battleground Ave.) B, L
The Old Filling Station on Fourth (Winston-Salem) L, D
West End Cafe (Winston-Salem) L, D
Carolina's Diner (Greensboro) B,L,D (24hrs.)
Jake's Diner (Greensboro) B,L,D (24hrs)
Plaza Cafe (High Point) B,L
Landmark Diner (Charlotte) B,L,D
Concord Diner (Concord) B,L,D

Well I an basicallly a road warrior.

May I humbly suggest the next time you are compelled to visit a WH you simply order hashbrowns, crisp, w/ whatever trips your trigger...cheese, onions, peppers or plain. Use the hot sauce...Tabasco...seen that in any joints of this ilk? Heinz 57...same comment as above.

Actually when I'm traveling (usually three nights per week /three weeks per month...otherwise the dog barks at me when I come home) I eat at WH four time a week. Two breakfasts, one dinner and one lunch.

Roadfood places are great but the Steins aren't really NC, SC and TN freaks. And they haven't the foggiest idea of good BBQ. I find my own but as a traveling man I many many times must eat when and where I can...and what exit on an interstate in the south doesn't have a WH?

Thought it was interesting you mention Concord Diner in Concord, NC as a good place. I live next to Concord and the only comments I've gotten back about them is "Go to Waffle House, they're better and faster" and we live here.

Landmark Diner in Charlotte? I was born there, spent a few years in college there and have never heard of the place. I an unbeliavably ignorant individual however.

Concord diner was not so good until 2001 when they went through renovations.
I visited there 2x. The first was before the renovation in 1999. I wasn't impressed.
The second time was right after the renovation. There were new owners and everything was great, from food to service.
I left NC shortly thereafter. Dion't know if the quality is still the same as it was in 2001.

No battle lines I was just surprised to get a recommendation to a place scorereader hadn't visited in four years.

Just me I'm sure but I don't generally recommend any place I haven't been to in a year. Sure I have done it but I

No, WH hasn't improved or declined it pretty much hasn't changed in anyway for the past thirty years.

Just did a search for Concord Diner...about a block of so from Mr. K's and a mile from a WH. What do you recommend, its close to the Harris Teeter we sometimes shop.

Walk in. See if it's ok.
If it's dirty or looks crappy, walk out.
and report.
I'll take it off my suggestion list.

I went in 1999, then 2 years later.
in 1999 I was disappointed -it was old and smelly.
On my return visit in 2001, it was good.

I'm guessing I ordered an omlette. Probably with sausage and cheese.

We'll ride by and I'll go in but w/ Mr. K's right around the corner it's gonna be tough to get the family into a new place. Mr. K's is a clean hole in the wall w/ great fried chicken and fantatstic burgers.

Let you know.......
